Does anyone know anything about the home to duty claims?

When we moved here, DH looked into getting home to duty, but was told by the (Army) clerk in the admin place that he wasn't entitled. Twice since he has asked and been told no( by Army admin clerks)

We live a half hour (on a good day) drive from his work, it is 8 miles as the crow flies. There is no transport provided, he has no choice but to drive.

Anyway, an RAF admin friend of mine has said that there is a ruling that if you live more than a mile from your work, and there is no possible way you could get there without a car, then you can claim it. She also said that he should claim and would get it backdated to the 30th May 2007! So almost a years worth.
Again DH has asked the Army clerks - see this is what happens when you ahve Tri-service places - and again they have said no.

Does anyone know what I'm talking about

From the MOD website - hope this helps:

g. Home to Duty Travel (HDT): HDT is paid because Service personnel are obliged to be mobile. Service personnel, unlike their civilian counterparts, have limited choice in where they work. Service personnel often are able to choose between living in public and private accommodation. To recognise this difference, there are 2 types of support for travel to work: HDT (Public) and HDT (Private).

i. HDT (Public). Those living in public accommodation often have little control over where their accommodation is situated. Thus, the Department provides them with a travel allowance. It is, however, considered reasonable for Service personnel to walk one mile to work. As a result, no financial support is given for any first mile travelled to and from work. This first mile is called the Personal Contribution (PC). Beyond the first mile, HDT (Public) provides support.

ii. HDT (Private). Those who choose to live in private accommodation have more control over where their accommodation is situated. The payment of HDT (Private), however, recognises that they are still required to be mobile and that they save the Department money by living in their own homes (as opposed to living in public accommodation). The average commuting distance for the general public in the UK is 9 miles. Thus, HDT (Private) is not payable for journeys to and from work which are less than 9 miles each way. These first 9 miles are the HDT (Private) PC. This PC also recognises that subsequent assignments are likely to mean that Service personnel who elect to stay in their current RWA may travel more than 9 miles to work.

ST - the second bit is what the Army guy told him. That he had to live more than 9 miles away to qualify. DH did ask if this applied to people in MQ's as well and was told yes.

SO he does qualify for the first part then, the HDT Public part.

Hmm, now what would that work out at, 16 miles a day, 5 days a week for a year!

Saltire - make sure he claims and gets it backdated. Idf I can find this on the MOD site, so can the lazy army gits.

Don't worry I have been on the phone to him, and he is on his way back to the Admin section to claim and get it backdated, and tell them where to look on the MOD websites!.
Should be a tidy sum

£0.31 per mile - it's on both the Navy community website and the RAF one, so they have no legs to stand on at all.

£24.80 per week...buy a nice bottle of wine on the promise of that then!

saltire · 30/04/2008 15:45

I worked it out at that weekly sum, over 48 weeks (since it's not a full year),and I make it £1190!
I could have fun with that.

Don't forget the £0.40 on the end. That'll buy a bar of galaxy!

I got pissed off when dh moved to Brussels and we were in UK that they didn't do a GYH package. I think it was cheaper to get to Cornwall from here than it was from Fas Lane.

Hopefully it will get paid into the bank when DH is off somewhere, then I can decide what happens to it.
