for DP's long service or something, theres quite a few of them partners are welcome to attend.

it's a mess function from what I can gather but no food (grateful for as have ds 5mo) but I have no idea what to wear - i'm still BF ds so it needs to be a 2 peice, his mess is formal when it needs to be but likewise balls etc it's not strict no shoulders etc like other messes.

would a calf length floaty skirt cut it in black - some high boots and a smart top? if so what sort of top, or am I safer going with trousers & a blouse?

dp is obv in mess dress & ds will have a little suit/shirt set.
thanks

Ask for clarification. If this was a daytime event then I would say what you suggested is fine. Skirt is better that trousers I think. If it's an evening do and the other ladies are wearing dresses then definately a skirt and a more dressy top. The fact that the guys are in mess kit makes me think it would be more formal but having children there makes it seem less so. I would be unsure what to wear too.

It sounds as though it is a medal presentation ceremony, in which case it is normally Number 1s for service personnel so smart skirt/trousers/'day dress' and smart top or jacket would be fine. Think the sort of thing you might wear for a nice Sunday lunch out for a special occasion if it a day time event, otherwise ask DP for more info.

will clarify today, it's at lunch time well 12 ish he thinks but i'm sure he's said 2 previously.

It is a medal ceremony. sorry to sound dense but ive only had two functions in the mess before the xmas ball and more recently a formal function. times like this i wish we lived on the patch to compare lol.

the unit as a whole is very family orientated which is excellent hence why children are being allowed to come (well DS2 as DS1 will be at school).

are knee length boots suitable or more office work shoes?

Are you sure he's going to be in mess kit? That's normally just for evenings, as far as I know. Even at our wedding, DH wore his blues and then just changed into mess dress for the evening. I think a skirt, knee length boots and nice top would be fine. Congratulations to him - and you! - for getting his LSGC!

davidtennantsmistress · 25/01/2012 14:04

thanks, although we've only been together 2 out of his 16 ( nearly years) in but still very proud.

he's in 2's apparently as confirmed today, and the exceptions been made for ds2 as he's a baby but other children are not invited, there's food but not a sit down function.

shall get a shopping on friday ready for next week - it's typical my hair apt is thursday night & we're going thurs day lol.

Acceptable is skirt/trousers and jumper/cardigan/blouse/top or blouse. Knee high boots are fine too. Thats the equivalent of a jacket and tie. Equivalent of a lounge suit is a dress, skirt suit, trouser suit. For both, any footwear is fine apart from slippers, trainers or flip flops! A useful reference is to never be knowingly under dressed!

You tend to sit towards the back, but will be directed to seating so don't worry about that. Your DH will sit at the front/with the other medal recipients. Children are positively welcomed, it lasts about an hour and there is normally tea/coffee/squash and biscuits afterwards where there is about 15 mins socializing then people tend to thin out (his boss will probably be there and may meet you). There will be the RSM or equiv for Army in charge, SWO for the RAF and a WO for the RN (probably a special title here too but I'm not an RN expert!).

Have fun Smile.
