"Up to 13,500 military personnel will help with security at the Olympics". Do we have that many military personnel left?

Heard today a RAF corporal has been told he has to cancel his honeymoonSad

EdithWeston · 15/12/2011 21:31

Here's an earlier thread from "In the News" (from when they were first announcing the augmentation) in which the poster I believe to be from a current military household was very supportive of this role; as being an unproblematic thing to do, within capability and well within typical disruption levels.

There wasn't an answer of whether any personnel would be in civilian or military uniform (and if so which sort). And I have to wonder where all these people will sleep. Hasn't most of the military estate in London been sold off?

Is it known how many will be in London. They seem to be counting them in thousands. Where will they put them?

And will they be in military uniform, and if so what sort?

scaryteacher · 15/12/2011 22:42

HMS Ocean will be parked in the Thames for logisitics, ops and accommodation purposes, and yes Edith, I am a member of 'a current military household'.

It's good PR for the Forces and a visible presence. The police aren't happy about it, so it will be interesting to see how many HM Force personnel are actually used.

The DT has more here www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/olympics/8958598/London-2012-Olympics-13500-military-personnel-to-provide-security-for-Games.html

WingDad · 16/12/2011 06:59

Well, it still won't fulfil my life-long ambition of being "one-of-them-military-persons-who-stands-around-looking-smart-and-official-at-wimbledon".

I want to be one of them. Please.

mpsw · 16/12/2011 08:18

The Olympics isn't a PR opportunity for the British military.

A good job will be done - it always is. But I wish it was not using such extensive numbers in such obvious roles.

Some niche defence roles have to be military, but not everything that is being asked.

The accommodation issue has not yet been adequately resolved. I've not heard anything about dress. Nor whether DH will be caught up in it.

TalcAndTurnips · 16/12/2011 08:19

WingDad - the Aussie killick who showed us to our seats at Wimbledon this year thought all his Christmases had come at once; he claimed to have been propositioned on several occasions by very glam ladies - and had enjoyed the best views on Centre Court to boot...

I've read the other thread scary - and feel equally puzzled as to why anybody should mistrust or fear the presence of our military personnel at the Olympics. Of course, being on this side of the fence, we know that they're all human and as normal as the next man/woman - nobody we know joined up to become a paid killer, or to intimidate or menace.

I always think about scenes from hurricane-stricken islands - how immensely glad were those unfortunate victims to see service personnel appearing over the horizon; with emergency supplies, aid and the skills to rebuild their shattered communities?

How happy were the crews of stricken, sinking vessels when an RN or RAF helicopter winchman is lowered (at enormous personal risk) to pluck them to safety?

How different would the world be, if every ship carrying goods, fuel or passengers was at the mercy of ruthless pirates - because there was no counter-piracy activity? As fossil fuels (including gas) become scarcer - the importance of keeping our trade routes patrolled will only increase.

I wish these, and other less-well publicised aspects of our Forces' roles were more widely known and understood - it might change some ill-informed opinions.

mpsw · 16/12/2011 08:30

It won't the profile if we don't understand that that is how people see the military. It's not always helpful to bang on about the "should" and to dismiss other views as puzzling. The PR wallahs will, I hope, make whatever effort is needed to get beyond personal mystification and other shortcomings.

The snag here is the introduction of military into roles that can (and therefore to some should) be done by others. No-one minds the military fulfilling MACGD roles in crisis, when it is clear that specific assets are needed. This is not however a remotely comparable set of circumstances.

The Olympics role has either been badly described, or includes events stewarding. That is neither a military role, nor a role which can only be done by soldiers. I can fully see why there is disquiet amongst some. It is not a scenario typical of UK's approach to policing and public order.

scary - you put across some good points in that thread ove rin News section Grin. You are far more articulate than me, i just rant!

I dont honestly know the ins and outs of it but if presented with the choice of having my bag searched by someone in an ill fitting dayglo jacket or by someone in a proper uniform then I know which queue I would join.

Deafworm · 16/12/2011 18:51

Eek, my due date with dc4 is august 14th Sad

loopydoo · 16/12/2011 21:35

Well, it's solved the problem over where to stay in the south of France - we now don't have to go. DH said he's probably not going to have to support in London but he has to send a load of guys so it'd look a bit crap if they had to miss their hols whilst he was sunning it up on the Cote D'Azur.

scaryteacher · 17/12/2011 23:14

'That is neither a military role, nor a role which can only be done by soldiers.'

Gosh no; I would hope that the RN and the RAF might be allowed to join in too! The Forces do not solely consist of soldiers; there are three Armed Services of which the RN is the senior. I am sick to the back teeth of the generic 'soldier' being used for Forces Personnel when they are not all soldiers, and have very different skill sets.

Knownothingknowitall · 18/12/2011 11:37

We've just cancelled our holiday. DH RN has had his leave cancelled and told he'll be in London and Weymouth alternating every 2 weeks for 2.5 months! He's lost his Christmas leave this year too for completely unrelated issues but I like to moan Angry.

My DH is quite excited by the whole thing. Not sure if he will be affected, but if it brings him back from Faslane to London, that is a GOOD thing! We didn't get any tickets, so if it means that he gets to see some sport, he will be happy. Not srue I will be. I have friends who have done Wimbledon - all volunteers (I think it is oversubscribed), and all have loved it. I can see that it is a real pain for some people, but there are some upsides too (unlike standing in at a fireman strike...)

Hear hear Scary.
