Ideal Christmas Presents for someone about to deploy

Looking for some ideas for dh's Christmas presents. He will be deploying in the New Year on Op Herrick.

All the usual ideas have gone out of the window!

Thanks in advance.

Metal (or other unbreakable) cafetiere, or individual plunger mug (I think Lakeland used to do one). You can send out favourite coffee regularly when he's there.

Thanks! He has one of those

It's so hard after a while isn't it?

My husband (ex Royal Navy ) says buy a pen so they can fill out their resignation form, I think it was when his leave was cancelled on 23rd Dec in order to chase a Russian submarine around the Baltic that he'd finally had enough , oh and they ran out of beer at lunchtime on New Years Eve !

Leave at Christmas? Beer? Sounds like a good deal Xmas Grin

Second the proper coffee/equipment thing as my husband (who deployed two weeks ago) has been very grateful for the cafetiere and coffee I sent out. He says the smell is enough to make home feel closer, and little luxuries go a long way. Something funny on DVD/iPod in half hour installments for amusement during down time (Blackadder/Coupling etc). Small photo album with pictures of the children.

A Kindle pre-loaded with lots of books? They hold their charge for ages and take up little room, especially the new version.

Good luck with the deployment.

I just saw a Christmas ad where a soldier is shown opening a Christmas gift that was a book with a recording of his daughter reading it.

Was this in 1994 G&BA? Are you sure it was the Baltic?

Aeropress Coffee maker for quick coffees, Kindle, Ipad, subscription to The Week and gloves (it's getting chilly out there).

pimmsgalore · 15/12/2011 10:29

sounds really silly but you could buy him a hanging wardrobe like this my DH loved his when he went last year even sold it to his replacement Grin

jcscot · 15/12/2011 21:00

The other thing my husband asked for was comfy socks to wear at night as it's pretty cold.

hf128219 · 16/12/2011 09:05

Thanks guys - good ideas! I though the use of ipads/mobiles etc has
been tightened up?

OP posts:
DoorStop · 16/12/2011 09:35

Mobiles yes, ipads no. I suppose it may depend on where exactly your DH will be - but where DH is there is free access to wireless (but it does get clogged up at certain times of the day). If you want any more specific details pm me and I will ask DH when he next calls (hopefully later on today).

DoorStop · 16/12/2011 09:36

Sorry, that's a bit confusing. I mean they've tightened up on mobiles but not ipads!

hf128219 · 16/12/2011 10:06

Thanks. Another question- does the OA get paid monthly or at the end of tour?

OP posts:
DoorStop · 16/12/2011 17:50

DH says OA paid at the end of the tour. Ipads definitely fine, though the wireless can be intermittent.

jcscot · 16/12/2011 18:39

OA gets paid at end of tour

hf128219 · 16/12/2011 21:54

Thanks re the OA.

You can A&E an iPad or kindle that works on wifi, but not 3G one. All of those are banned at least at Bastion. My DH is there now, and has been sine beginning of July. Can't wait for him to come home. I sent mince pies and a Christmas cake out to him, he said they all got there in good nick. Also another bloke goes his wife to send bacon crisps!! It seems they are good currency with the Americans Blush

herdingcats · 15/12/2012 21:16

A&E !! = Take
