DE (or whatever they're called now) told us a few weeks ago that as long as carpets are 'safe', they can be kept for over the 10 yr limit.

They said they can't afford to change them unless it's for H & S reasons and were planning on saving money by keeping carpets after 10 years that were perfectly fine.

Hmm thanks nomiddle this is what I have been told by them to. Appreciate no money in pot but the problem is thier version of what is servicable - my carpets smell, have huges and lots of wrinkles, and are heavily stained. Not nice with 2 under 3 yrs and learning to crawl etc :(

It seems like others (who had better carpets than me) get new ones by getting HVs and Doctors involved just wondered if anyone else had any experience of actually winning with DE?

P.S. Im not being a spoiled princess my carpets are MANKY!

I don't blame you for wanting new carpets, but a word of caution, with 2 under 3 can you afford to pay for them when you leave?

Our house was supposed to have new carpets when we moved in, but we asked them not to do it, and just hired an industrial cleaner to give them a boost. We've just dine them again, and wow you wouldn't believe the dirt that came out after only a year (and a 5 yr old). Our carpet is stained, definately, and if they weren't already written off I have no doubt we'd be charged for them - a friend lost a huge whack of their disturbance allowance when they charged her for carpets.

Could you put a few big rugs down instead? It may be safer.

Saying that, my neighbour has recently had carpets after her son was diagnosed with asthma, they paid for special low shedding thingys, but she has to contribute.

If you can put up with yours I would, your dc will probably make them much dirtier! I get you though, it's a crap situation.

Very good point about not having to be billed on march out but honestly my carpets really are beyond sensible. The - at least I wont be billed on march out thing is the only thing I have to console myself with :)

Ha ha my God if they do try billing me for these carpets when we leave I think steam would actually shoot from my ears Angry :)

I know im stuck with the horrible carpets and big rugs probably are the best idea but then we get to the awfull colours they chose 12 years ago! Ahh well jsut gotta hope and pray the next house is better, life in MQs hey.

I have carpet rage/envy I know I do!

Awful colours, oh yes. We have a dirty greeny blue downstairs and a very strange purpley pink upstairs! Oh for some boring beige...

If you want to get rid of the smell then put fairy liquid on them and scrub with a scrubbing brush then go over with a carpet cleaner, my mum told me this trick when our first MQ smelt so much of dogs that my cat wouldn't go in the house. I know lot of hassle with little ones helping. As for the wrinkles they should at least be able to send someone out to stretch your carpets, we've had this done several times in the past. The colour is an issue but hey you could be me with lovely red/orange fleck ones downstairs and they are only 3 years old Shock someone before us obviously lived in the 70's

planetpotty · 18/09/2011 07:38

Will definately give the fairy liquid and scrubing brush a go - ive tried everything else!

Think the worst ones I had ever were the bright green ones but the red I have seen is very special ---- who on earth was employed to pick the colours? and why did they hate us? :)

Fingers crossed for oatmeal in the next MQ!

I went to DE about our carpets and they got an carpet assessor to come out he said if we kept them we wouldn't get billed when we moved out.I've lived in quarters 10 yrs and these were bad so told him that this was going to be my home for the next 3yrs and that I would pay if we were charged on move out.He agreed to do them :) they were so bad I used to use the hard floor setting on hoover on them.

If they are wrinkled they are a trip hazard for your young children and should be replaced for health and safety reasons.

When we moved into our current SFA, DD was just past her second birthday and not totally steady on her feet. There was a massive ripple in the carpet at the top of the stairs and I pointed out that it could cause my daughter to fall down the stairs. They were replaced within weeks.
