Yes or NO? Military personnel signed off sick

are they supposed to be sick in quarter/barracks? Not signed off sick but "oh I'll just go and do a job on the side and get some extra money for it" are they?

Really winds me up, DH got signed off sick in November just before we were due to go to a wedding in Scotland and he was going to cancel going to the wedding because he said "I'm supposed to be sick in quarters, I cannot go to a wedding".
We did go in the end as he'd put leave in for it and the Wg Cmdr told him to go,

My dad is just like this. He was hospitalised for pneumonia a couple of years ago. I was living in Cyprus at the time and had to come back to the UK so naturally visited him. He was out of hospital but still not well and had been signed off work for a further fortnight. It was Jan, wet grey damp and he was sitting in doors all day so I suggested he flew back with me for a week. A chance to see his grandchildren, get a bit of sunshine, a chance to get outside. OH MY WORD - you'd think I'd just suggested he take the kids to Disneyland for a fortnight - I can't do that, I'm off sick, I can't go on holiday etc etc etc

Anyway once we'd prised him off the ceiling we convinced him it was a good idea, got cheap flights, I escorted him to Cyprus and he had a very quite but warm and sunny week, went back to the UK and felt so good he went back to work.

He felt so guilty he told his boss who totally agreed with us.

Depends what the MO has written on the sick chit! It could be sick with excused all duties which for some means do everything aside for what they are paid for!

MrsSnaplegs · 27/04/2011 12:10

It totally depends on what is on their sick chit - however to work another job alongside your normal military one you must have permission from the CO and when signed off you are normally not allowed to do the extra job unless it has been recommended by MO. there is a reference book but I am not at work so can't access the details.

What service? What is normal job ? What are they doing extra?? I am going in to work later or tomorrow (even though I am on leave Sad) I can look up the regulations.

Saltire · 27/04/2011 13:05

He is MPGS, and definately doesn't have permisssion to do extra job, I know this because I mentioned it and he said "Oh I'm not bothering with that in case they make me declare my earning and it's cash in hand and would affect our tax credits"Hmm

He is helping out a friend, don't want to give too much info, but basically helping a firend by doing labouring work whilst he renovates a building and getting cash in hand for doing it
I get the impressiont hat the MO won't be aware of the 2nd job

I would suggest if he is well enough to do labouring he is well enough to do mpgs work however to give him benefit of doubt he may be off with work related stress or a mental health issue

scaryteacher · 28/04/2011 14:23

Last time dh was signed off sick was with shingles and it was so bad he couldn't get back to Brussels for a month.

I think the view is you have to be dying to get a sick note and not be in work, otherwise take two brufen and crack on.

I don't think working on the side is appropriate really. If any of dh's staff had been caught doing that it would have been an interview negative coffee.

jcscot · 29/04/2011 09:40

Working on the side is definitely not on. Decaff interview for certain if caught!

swingingcat · 29/04/2011 10:15

Working "on the side" is allowed if the CO has given permission. Many who are nearing completion of time served are given permission.

LeonardNimoy · 30/04/2011 18:58

Loads of the MPGS guys have (legitimite) second jobs that they do on their 4 off.

scaryteacher · 01/05/2011 20:35

Working 'on the side' not on for dh or any of his mob.

scaryteacher · 01/05/2011 20:35

...and when do they get time to work 'on the side' anyway? Out to make the office by 0730 and home at 2000.

LeonardNimoy · 02/05/2011 10:16

No, but MPGS is different. For a start they have the 4 on 4 off shift pattern, they donlt deplot - lots of them have second jobs that they do on their "4 off", all authorised by their chain of command.

LeonardNimoy · 02/05/2011 10:17

don't deploy

MrsSnaplegs · 02/05/2011 10:39

But the original question was if the guy was signed off sick from mpgs work should he be able to work cash in hand on a builders labouring job.

Shoshe · 02/05/2011 10:44

Dh is MPGS and has a second job, all authorized, it is quite usual for them, wages are not great, and housing is only if surplus is available (which it is not here, been told anything up to a years wait) so most have second jobs.

mpsw · 03/05/2011 11:45

If he has CO's permission, then he can have a second job providing it doesn't interfere with his duties.

It's his own responsibility to sort out his tax/tax credits himself. If he's not declaring income, then wouldn't that be a matter for the Revenue?

But if he's abusing sick absence specifically to engage in a second job when he should be at his ordinary duties, then I'd say that's definitely one for the CoC.

coccyx · 04/05/2011 12:24

Would CO still be ok with it, if it was cash in hand....doubt it

Saltire · 04/05/2011 12:52

He definately hasn't got permission - he admitted as much. He's been signed off sick long term.
