Hi,

My husband is in the Army and we are being posted to Gutersloh in Germany. I was wondering if anyone has been there or knows anything about the quarters there and the area?

I am qute anxious about the move so any info would be great,

Thanks x

Have you contacted the HIVE yet? They will send/email you a pack if you send them a quick email. It will be full of loads of info about quarters and local area, schools and what's on camp etc.

here is the direct link to the Gutesloh publication on the HIVE BFG website

If you are taking a pet, make sure you apply for the PETS passport in plenty of time.

Thanks for that, I have emailed them today and waiting for a reply, but nothing beats real experiences from fellow army wives!

Luckily no animals, just a little boy. That's enough to contend with!

prb or mansergh?
we were at prb. lived on newtonweg. very lovely.
dd1 born in bielefeld at the gilead. used to go to baby groups at prb, but mansergh had fab soft play and thrift shop. Grin nursery was ok at mansergh. um - shopping fine. furniture porn c/o natur und wohnen - i assume they still have a giant blue chair out the front, so you can't miss it...

was yonks ago though. i'm not really current. oddly, army bases seem to stay the same for a hundred years though, so i doubt much has changed. Grin

We were in Bielefeld which is the next town along but had some good friends in Gutersloh so we went there a lot. The quarters vary from your bog standard army patch to some lovely newly-built ones a bit further from camp. Theres a chance we might get sent there next and I'd be very happy with that as a posting. The German stadt also top up your UK child benefit to German levels which is worth having. Its called Kindergelt and the forms are a bit of a faff but the welfare office will help. Keep your child benefit renewal letter when it arrives cos you'll need it to put in your claim.

Ps: Madwoman - my DS was born at the Gilead last year. They have birthing pools now, and big hooks in the ceiling so you can hang from a rope while giving birth!

madwomanintheattic · 18/04/2011 16:04

Shock blimey. do they still ban gas and air and give you homeopathic anti stress drops in labour?

and force feed the newborns fennel tea? Grin ah, i do miss the cultural differences of childbirth around the world Grin

Scootergrrrl · 18/04/2011 18:55

Gas and air still banned - paracetamol or epidural anyone? They seemed very keen to wrap the babies up (vest, sleepsuit, padded gilet, grobag AND duvet) and all the mums seemed to be pumping their milk then feeding the babies with expressed milk in bottles. And no baths for six weeks (mums not babies!) Great fun despite all that (just in case the OP is planning more children over here Grin)

madwomanintheattic · 18/04/2011 19:32

do they still have the clear plastic cots that you have put the sheet completely over the top before you are allowed to wheel them down the hall? and hide the babies under those massive duvets that look like clouds?
and demand you 'sitzbath' for days, with jugs of chamomile? Grin

aw, memory lane, eh? (i had a cs there. very efficient. Grin)
