AIBU to think if you've got time to do this whilst on ops ...

then you're not really needed and should come home to your family.

Feeling a bit sensitive because DH is about to deploy but I would very much feel that if he could be spared from his job for 9 days to just run round Bastion then he probably isn't really needed out there and should come home!

I have tried but can't work out if it really is the same people each running each marathon (which I think it is and is annoying me)or if between a team of them they will have run the equivalent of 9 marathons in 9 day (which would not annoy me)

I fully understand and support people wanting to raise money for excellent charities and there are other events that haven't made me think this.

I'm just being a bit ott aren't I.

I would assume it's a whole group of them working to complete the marathons over the time. I know my DH's unit is running/rowing the distance home (i think!).

loubielou31 · 05/03/2011 14:45

A friends DH is doing that, basically spending any free time in the gym clocking up the miles little by little. I just think that is madness but in a good way.

Yes YABVU.

I understand you're feeling sensitive though, having your DH recently go away but I bet he'd be the first one to get in there and raise money too.

The guys need some morale boosting events and what's 9 days if you think about how often flights are bodged up and missed/rerouted etc.

They have to keep fit whilst out there and what better way to do that whilst raising money for their colleagues/friends who have been injured.

loubielou31 · 05/03/2011 15:53

Does anyone actually know if this is individual or a team thing. I still feel that nine consecutive days is taking the piss a bit and that they should have jobs to do. Sorry but I do. I bet half the guys out there would love to spend nine days running around camp bastion instead of their day to day tasks.

OP posts:
vintageteacups · 05/03/2011 15:58

Hmm - they don't actually say how it's being done but I don't imagine that a shed load of guys are all having 9 consecutive days off together; it's probably like a relay type thing where they each do so many miles each and so someone is always running or something.

vintageteacups · 05/03/2011 15:59

Or perhaps, it's jsut a couple of them doing it, in which case, I'm sure that they won't be too missed and their jobs perhaps have a bit of a lull.

perarduaadinfinitum · 05/03/2011 16:12

I agree Vintage. It's definitely more than one as you can tell from the comments on the donations page. It would only take 5-10 of them to be able to do this really quite easily (if you are a runner that is), or even fewer if you really are fit.

Don't forget even if they are working a 10 hour shift they have little else to do but eat, sleep and exercise in the other 14 hours. Instead of lazing around in their spare time they are doing something useful.

penguin73 · 05/03/2011 18:27

YABVU and v selfish....hopefully you will never need H4H but think of those that do. Am a bit speechless TBH.

Having chatted last night over dinner to one of our friends who is an experienced marathon runner and is hoping to do a seven in seven whilst in Bastion said that actually part of the challenge is finding the time to do the run and your work.
I'm still quite surprised that it is possible but that is from my completely non runner perspective. He said that it would take him about four hours to run a marathon distance, (apparently that would be taking it a bit easy because of doing another the next day) and so my initial perception of it taking most of the day is obviously way out.
Having chatted with him I'm actually quite in awe that anyone would be able to do your normal days work and then do a very long run in difficult conditions.

So in summary, IWBU each guy will be doing the full nine marathons in nine days and will be completing a full days work. I hope they achieve it.

Wowsers - they are fab then!

I have to say, my DH could generally get up and with no training, other than his general army fitness training, run a marathon.

They have to be so fit for their jobs (most of them) so running a marathon isn't such a big deal as a non-forces person doing it (I for one, couldn't even run a mile!!!) Grin

vintageteacups · 06/03/2011 10:25

Doing in that heat though - that will be the toughest challenge.

jenga079 · 06/03/2011 10:41

Wow! Good for them! I imagine it's an extension of 'Op Massive' - just a way to keep fit, keep active, find something to do while they're not actually working and are on a pretty dull camp, and also to impress us with their bulging muscles when they get back Wink

perarduaadinfinitum · 06/03/2011 14:45

Impressive!

mpsw · 06/03/2011 19:21

DH has lays said that in between the frenetic bits of ops, there are always times when it's "hurry up and wait". This looks like a brilliant way to fill in some of the down time.

Mrs Snaplegs has been posting about a medics initiative (from Bastion to Blighty) that I hope will also raise a lot for good causes.

loubielou31 · 07/03/2011 14:06

"Hurry up and wait" Ha Ha I can just imagine that being very much the case.

Chulita · 07/03/2011 14:10

I was all ready to say YABU but I'm too late, I hope they manage it - can't say it'd be my idea of fun.

jenga Not just my DH then who goes out intending to come back and impress me with his muscles only to rediscover Haribo while he's out there and come back looking exactly the same Grin

Bellagee · 25/03/2011 23:45

My brothers out there and is headed the marathon run, they risk a lot and go thought shit they are running on behalf of there mate who got injured, they are doing it together like they do everything as a team they are well up for it and will do this easy as they won't let there friend down, they can't come home and believe me they don't have time off you know there always doing something,f even I can't wait for my bro to be home safe but wot a thing to do just before they return home I'm so proud and he is a inspiration to me they all are as I believe they should not be out there anyway I know my bro they will do it all of them and good luck to them it's for a really good corse god bless them xxx

wheresthepimms · 26/03/2011 17:59
