Life insurance

Hello,

What do you all do about life insurance?

Both dh (navy) and myself need to sort out life cover. Dh is deploying in the new year for 6 months. He's looking into PAX as most of the people he work with have it through them.

Does anyone have any advice as to companies who will insure in afghan etc. Also- is there anything he needs to make sure is covered or anything that we wouldn't need?

We have had quotes from few companies but they wouldn't insure him when he deploys.

we have whole of life cover which is expensive, but covers or did when we took it out the fact that dh went to sea, and that we would maintain the cover until one of us dies.

Forces Financial say they provide cover for war risks, Abacus may well do. I google Forces Insurance to get a list normally.

sandy if your DH died on op tour, you would get all of his pension anyway so you don't need to worry about that if he dies whilst in Afghan.

We have life insurance with Legal and General who have a cheap monthly combined payment of £19.41 for two policies but we took it out through Abacus - a forces agency who help with financial advice. The guy (ex forces) came round to our house and sat and chatted through what cover we would need.

We have increased DH's cover to make sure it would pay off the mortgage and leave me with a good amount to look after me and kids until I found a well paid job (I am a SAHM at the moment).

My cover is slightly less as he would still have his army job if I died.

Tell your DH to ask at work for the Abacus number - they don't force you to take out anything but they do specialise in forces circumstances whereas a civvie company wouldn't be so empathetic with that. We then told him what we wanted and he arranged it all for us.

I forgot all about forces financial. We've used them in the past for home insurance.

It's difficult for dh to look into things at the moment as he moving around constantly.

I'll tell him about abacus. It was easier when we were in mq as it was easier for me to ask around/go and get the info myself.

Also, forgot to ask- what would happen if dh died or was seriously injured outside of work(which meant he couldn't work) what would happen then money wise?

Where's the best place to get this kind of info? I don't think he has a written contract like you would get in a civvie job. Would it be on JPA?

I think it would be somewhere on JPA.
Surely if he was injured outside work, he'd be downgraded if still able to do some non-physical work and after that, I'm not sure.

I think that's a question you would ask the financial advisor. Usually, you would get an option to add cover for not being able to work. I've asked DH this before though and he said the army (I know you're navy) are gernally sympathetic and if you were going to be off for a certain time, then go back, then, they would write you on long term paid sick until you went back. But I guess if you never went back, you would get the pension or make sure you have a cover that provides for you if you can't work.

Although I haven't had personal experience of PAX I have met many of the guys who have had to claim on it and they have always sung it's praises for paying out for injuries sustained on ops. I remember one guy sat measuring his scar from a shrapnel wound to work out how much he was going to get Hmm

I would speak to an independent financial advisor who is used to dealing with Armed Forces issues, in the RN we have the White Ensign Association - they may be worth asking for a point of contact with an indepndent advisor.

luciemule · 26/10/2010 18:15

DH just told me that most life insurances don't pay out for op tour death so yes, check out PAX.

WingDad · 27/10/2010 01:48

I got a fair bit of money from our insurance company when I was half-blown up by an IED. I'm afraid I can't remember the name of the company (lemme off it's late!) but I'll ask my wife tomorrow and get back to you.

WingDad · 27/10/2010 01:50

Ah yes I remember now, it was PAX. I do remember our policy saying it would cover my death, but I'm not entirely sure (sorry, my wife deals with all insurance matters) so it's probably best to check.

dh has full PAX and a policy through AXA, which covers him for his op tours and extreme sports...
