Forces sweethearts

If you have a family member in the Royal Navy, RAF or army, find support from other Mumsnetters here.

Remind me to never rely on the "welfare support" offered at station level by the RAF

nice.

Saltire · 05/10/2010 16:03

That's only the half of it, I would out myself if I posted everything. And that's not including the stalking and spying her weird mate is doing

I find this extraordinary. You need to approach the main guy or whoever is the equivalent of the CO.

My dh spent hours (on our summer holiday I hasten to add) getting a family moved because of bullying/fighting/victimisation etc.

It can happen - if the 'man' at the top has the sense of duty he should have.

Saltire · 05/10/2010 17:36

hf - that's part of the problem.
The station commander has got no itnerest, he wants it swept out of the way - becasue he's out of here in a few weeks, and he wants to ahve an unblemished time here. he also thinks the shines out of the proverbial arses of the DH's of one of the women causing problems and won't hear a word against him

Well that is crap. A spineless man if there ever was.

Saltire · 06/10/2010 08:39

Spineless isn't the word I'd use. One of the women affected by this has threatened to email the press.

They talk about help 4 heroes and helping those wounded, which is right, so it should be, but they don't give a flying fuck about those serving, and the fact that some families are on the verge of splitting up because of this.

put it in writing to the stn cdr and keep a copy.

you might have to let it go until he is posted, but as soon as the new guy is in, call the pa and get a meeting, and inform him you have been let down by his welfare system.

if the press were involved, there would just be short notice postings all round i think. involve as many organisations as you can.

i can't remember, have you spoken to the padre? ( i recall that ssafa were fairly useless?)

i'd go back to them all, burst into tears, and get everything in writing.

saltire, i'm beginning to wonder if there is an ulterior motive to makiing everyone's lives difficult at the mo tbh - i know it's ridiculous, but the amount of shrugging and 'you know what to do if you don't like it' makes it look like they are actively encouraging people to pvr (saves spending any cash on redundancy...)

i know that it won't be an official policy, but making life easy for those serving and their families isn't saving any money.

i'm pretty much convinced that the guy in charge here has been told to destroy all relations with the local community so that it'll be easier to pull out when they give him the nod. Grin or that's just what it feels like...

scaryteacher · 06/10/2010 17:08

You do know that HM Forces aren't actually entitled to redundancy don't you. Dh told me this the other month, and when I googled it he was right! I suppose if you are going to get your lump sum and pension then the argument for redundancy goes away.

NickOfTime · 06/10/2010 21:42

oh yes, i know - and the civil service have recently done the same thing. but traditionally, if the services want to lose a large number of people in a short space of time (thinking historically) they have offered redundancy payments as a temptation... and we all know that they are pretty likely to want to lose a large number of people in a short space of time pretty soon. Grin

scaryteacher · 07/10/2010 07:43

I'm not so sure about that - they need the Army for at least the next 5 years, and the RM, so they should be OK. The RN is only 36,500 and has been overstretched and worked at a high tempo (at least in dh's bit) since 1986 at least; and although the RAF seems top heavy from the figures at Wing Cdr level, there will be a need for them providing the Air Bridge to Afghanistan until we pull out. I don't think they can ask the RN to do more with less as we've been doing that for years anyway.

I think they'll cut equipment first (we may lose a carrier, but we won't lose Trident from what was said at Conference) and loads of the RAF kit, and then look at manning. Dh has 3.5 years to go til he retires (has to leave at 53), so he is looking for jobs now as are several of his colleagues.

It will be interesting to see the outcome of the SDSR, but I don't suppose we'll know what it means for personnel until the bones have been picked out of it, and also the pension report is in for the Forces, which is a different review from the other public sector pension review. As we had the change from AFPS 75 to 05, I can't see how they'll change much. I assume the salary restriction may increase from it's current 8%.

NickOfTime · 07/10/2010 14:56

i don't disagree - just here in particular it looks very much as though they are planning to pull out as a cost savings measure (it won't be imminently, you know how long these things take) but there's a general air of 'off you pop, then'. the more that jump before they have to make cuts, the less cuts there will be in real terms.

it doesn't affect us at all tbh - dh is well past pension point and in the current climate could be out in 3mos (personnel are biting the hands off anyone who wants to pvr) - that said, he fancies waiting around for the next board to see what they offer him (unless something else comes up in the interim)

lol at airbridge - that's two brilliant comments today - i'm wondering if you actually know me Blush or if i have done my usual trick of splurging way too much information over tinternet for all to see...

NickOfTime · 07/10/2010 15:06

'pretty soon' may have been a tad previous - in the next few years

the airbridge has been propped up by an extremely large proportion of reserves for the last five years - was dealing with the fall-out until i left last year. in some cases the reserves are doing more tours than the regulars. Sad (harmony guidelines? Grin) - in this area - no idea about other reserve units.

i had the pleasure of briefing the TA on what they could be expecting over the next few years - they had no idea at all. still working on 'anyone want to be mobilised for this job?' and picking a volunteer. they were visibly shocked at what the blue 'volunteers' had been doing (compulsorily) for years.

apols for brief derail, saltire..

i need to put my soapbox away for a bit Grin

scaryteacher · 07/10/2010 17:14

db did 6 months at Bastion in his dark blue regular suit and Crabair was unpopular given that his R&R was cut either end due to planes.

NickOfTime · 07/10/2010 21:52

they are pretty much held together by tape these days - some you have to load cargo through the teeny weeny passenger door because the cargo doors don't close again if you open them.

but don't worry, they've got a nice shiny new area at brize with ps3's for those long lonely hours of waiting around...
