I believe that Military records are administered by an MoD office in Glasgow.

Google Army Records Glasgow.

Or look at www.findmypast.co.uk

What do you know already?

Did he join up during the war?

The staffs regiment may have a regimental museum somewhere in that county.

i only have vague memories of what my dad told us when we were little. i do know that he was 'eligible' for the black watch because his dad had been in that unit; he was only eligible because his wife had scottish ascendants

Army Personnel Centre in Glasgow holds current records.

Is you Grandfather still alive? If not did he die during the war? If so try the War graves commission - they havelinks to other military record archives.

If they can't help then try one of the online ancestry companies (you do have to pay) they have got some military records on line but nothing post WW1 I think at present.

no, he's not unfortuntately. he died in '81.

thank you so much everyone for all your help

OK would try the museums first then as they will have points of contact for the relevant records agencies.

Good luck
