Can I use cartons of readymade custard for trifle?

My feeling would be that it wouldn't set. Would have to be quite a soft trifle, which is rather nice actually. Could you bolster it with trifle sponges?

do you mean putting the on top of jelly? Let the jelly set then put custard on top

Yes I use M&S Madagascan vanilla custard for trifle, it doesnt set but I don't like it to set so I don't mind.

the Ambrosia stuff in tins is quite thick. I used that in a fruit tart the other day and it was fine.

No it won't set, but Nigel Slater made his trifle with it like this instead (no jelly). I tried it tonight with frozen berries and it was delish!
