We're going on an economy drive. Porridge for breakfast until we're out of our overdraft!

Soooooo.....how can I stop the children getting bored of it?

Demerara sugar goes down well
Maple syrup (expensive though!)

What else?

raisins - yummy!

FrazzleRock · 09/07/2010 13:14

Banana's good too

MrsWobbleTheWaitress · 09/07/2010 13:21

Fussy monkeys don't like raisins! But bananas sound good!

I was thinking of some of that ice-cream topping stuff - chocolate sauce, strawberry sauce?

DD1 tried strawberry jam on hers today and it wasn't very inspiring.

toasted almond slices, grated apple are other toppings we have, we also do an upside down, thing where chunks fruit ( have used tinned too) goes at the bottom and then you put the porridge on the top

I was given a giant jar of homemade blackberry jam that hadn't set properly. Was lovely mixed in with my porridge! Will have to wait until early August for this years blackberries to be ready though!

MrsWobbleTheWaitress · 09/07/2010 18:53

Thank you all so much! Should be able to keep my children really interested in porridge for ages now!

It's not wildly cheap, unless you really look out for the BOGOFs and special offers or visit a fruit farm and pick your own, but berries on porridge is really lovely. Strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, whatever. And it is really healthy too.

Also Sainsburys (and I assume most supermarkets) do big bags of frozen berries and other fruit. I think it's sold for crumble/stewed fruit but it's great for a porridge topping, pretty cheap, doesn't go off as it's in the freezer and you can just add some maple syrup or honey or sugar if you need more sweetness. The Sainsers Basics bag is only about a quid and would do toppings for porridge for around a week for one (reasonably greedy) person I think. I add it straight from the bag as DD likes her food only just above room temp but it would be quick and easy to stew some in a pan while you're cooking the porridge.

Actually, cheaper still would be picking your own and then freezing it.

Wow! That's a really inspired idea Thank you!

I slice half a banana (For 1 person), chop half an apple, add sultana's, and chopped apricots.

I always use jumbo oats, and add the ingredients before cooking with milk. Add syrup to finish.

Yum!

Smash09 · 10/07/2010 08:18

Peanut butter and banana or raisins! Yummm.

Littlepurpleprincess · 19/07/2010 19:09

I mash a banana into it, then you don't need to add sugar. And cinnamon is good.
