Hello I stopped boiling her water when she was about 16 months.

Made life so much easier.

nail polish - i think they say you should boil it up to six months and it is at this stage that they come into more contact with germs as they play on the ground, crawl and suck and dribble on all sorts, i just carried on for god knows what reason.

nailpolish · 18/08/2005 14:24

dd's never had water to drink til they were older than 6 mths, maybe thats why

lovecloud · 18/08/2005 14:27

same with mine she just had boobie juice

i think i started to give her water about 8/9 months.

i remember seeing really young babies about 3 months with water bottles and i always thought how do they fit them in? because at that age my dd just had my milk when she cried as i assumed she was just hungry, how do you know if its just thirst?

billiejo · 18/08/2005 14:29

right nuff's enough, am stopping right away....hurrah!! one thing though, do you think london water is too crap (hesitation edges in...)

I still used cooled boiled water for dd (12mths) most of the time. But when the water in the kettle is too hot I just use tap water!!! So.... whats the point really..... RIGHT Thats it! No more boiling tap water!!!

lovecloud · 18/08/2005 14:33

If you are worried about the quality of your water then for now you could wean her onto evian bottled water and then wean her onto tap water.

tap water is actually better than most bottled water. most brands of bottled water contain lots of bacteria but evian apparantly is the best bottled water for babies.

but dont worry, just give the tap water - we all drink it and we are fine!

billiejo · 18/08/2005 14:36

okay, it's decided then, often wondered why i bother when i find him drinking scuzzy old stagnant water from the spout of the watering can going "mmmmm..."

Definitely stopped ages ago with DD who is 15 months. Maybe at 6 months? So probably only did it for a fortnight.....

beansprout · 18/08/2005 15:11

HV told me until they are a year.

DissLocated · 18/08/2005 15:14

In the birth to 5 book it says boiled water until 6 months.

compo · 18/08/2005 15:16

only did it until 6 months.

madmarchhare · 18/08/2005 15:17

Deffo no older than 6months.

Flossam · 18/08/2005 15:19

So does the water to make up the formula definately still have to be boiled?

Bozza · 18/08/2005 15:21

Boil water for formula to 12 months I think.

compo · 18/08/2005 15:22

yes Flossam.

Flossam · 18/08/2005 15:23

Thank you! Lazy mummy alert!

Haven't boiled ds's water for formula since 4 months...

I just googled "formula boiled water". The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends boiling water for two minutes - ie boiling your kettle till it switches itself off is not enough. And they say there is no reason to think bottled water will be any safer than tap water - you need to boil that too. Up until 1995 they used to say you don't need to boil the water, then there was some nasty bug in the water somewhere in the states and now they're a bit more paranoid.

And then there is this - lead poisoning presumably if you have lead pipes.

Most American sites say run the water from the cold tap for two minutes and then use it; no need to boil. If you do need to boil (well water etc) then you need to do it for 5 minutes.

Canadian advice is "For infants under 4 months of age, water should be brought to a rolling boil for at least 2 minutes."

Flossam · 18/08/2005 15:59

Oh, MT, I ducked past that one!!

nailpolish · 18/08/2005 20:36

i think its different for milk, because bacteria can grow more readily in milk than just plain water to drink on its own

GREENY · 14/09/2005 15:51

My baby just turned 1 year old on Sunday!! my god where does time go!! I am unsure when and how to get him onto full fat milk from formula, its a scary change!!

Help!!

staceym11 · 14/09/2005 16:50

I stopped boiling dd's drinking water at 6 months when i stopped sterilising!

as for milk i put dd onto one bottle a day (as well as two bottles of formula) at 10 months will introduce a second with one formula in a few weeks and another a few weeks later!

hope that helps, anymore q's feel free to ask!
