What about bobotie? You can leave out the spices... We ate it a lot as kids, but there are lots of nice meat loaf recipes...

How about home made burgers? They're dead easy to make. Fry a finely chopped onion til nice and soft. Leave to cool. Mix with mince, salt, pepper and some dried mixed herbs if you've got any, a beaten egg and a tbsp of flour or dried breadcrumbs. Shape into burgers about 2cms thick and if you have time put them in the fridge for about an hour. Fry for about 15 mins and serve with salad or sweetcorn or peas or whatever you like.

meatballs.

mix mince with VERY fine chopped onion and an egg. Make into ping pong ball sized balls. Bake in oven at gas 6 / 200C for 20 minutes. Serve with anything you like - egg friend vegetable rice is nice.

Mince pie, pasties, chilli.

My kids like these (a bit boring but child friendly

Creamy mince: cook 1lb mince with garlic, onion, peas, carrots and oxo cube. When mince is browned and veg cooked, stir in 4tblspns of flour and stir about until any fat is absorbed and the mince is a kind of grey colour. Gradually stir in a pint of milk to make a white sauce sort of thing. Bring to the boil, stirring and then simmer for 5 minutes or so until thickened into a milky gravy. Serve over mashed potatoes.

Tomato mince: brown 1lb mince with an onion, garlic and an oxo cube. Stir in 1 tin chopped tomatoes, 1 small tin tomato puree and 1 tin condensed cream of tomato soup or 1/2pint of thick tomato sauce (made like white sauce except using a tin of chopped toms and 1/4 pint evap milk). Cook for about 20 mins and then stir through about 1/2lb frozen peas which have been defrosted. Heat through. Then you can either eat as is or stir through a bag of cooked pasta, pout into a baking dish and top with some grated cheese. BAke until cheese is melted and golden and mince stuff is bubbly.

Mushroom mince: brown 1lb mince with an onion, garlic, chopped mushrooms. Add 1tblspn smoked paprika and a tin of condensed mushroom soup or 1/2 pint thick mushroom sauce. Add some chopped flat leaf parsley as well.Simmer for about 20 minutes. Remove from the heat and stir through a small carton of sour cream. Serve with pasta or mash.

Mince and potatoes: Brown 1lb mince with an onion. Thinly slice a couple of pounds of potatoes. Then layer potatoes and mince in a lasagne dish, potatoes, mince, potatoes. Pour over about 1/2pint of beef stock, cover with tinfoil and bake at 170 until potatoes are soft and mince is completely cooked. To crisp the top, take the tinfoil off for the last 30 mins of cooking.

Meatball subs: make matballs using mince, finely chopped onion, grated carrot some breadcrumbs (just like making burgers) Cook the meatballs and set aside. Slice some sub rolls and spread the bottoms with a philly type cheese. Add meatballs, about 4 or per roll, top with some tomato pasta sauce and some grated cheese. Stick in a medium oven for about 15 minutes until the rolls are nice and crispy and it is hot right through.

The traditional Scottish way is to brown the mince with an onion, then add diced carrots, swede and potatoes, Scatter over a tablespoon of flour and add about 1/2 a pint of beef stock and some pepper. Simmer for a couple of hours until thick and delicious.

You could also try koftas, meatloaf or there is a cookbook called Mince by Mitzie Wilson which has nothing but various mince recipes in it. I think that it's about a tenner from Amazon.

The Americans, who more or less invented hamburgers, have the best way of doing it, IMO.

Just meat. And a bit of salt. That's it!

British mince is coarser than American "ground beef" but this is easily remedied. Just put the mince in a bowl and mash it up with a fork, breaking up the strands of mince until the whole mush is much finer. Add the salt when you're doing this.

Then shape them into hamburgers and chill for an hour or two (the burgers as well if you like!) No faffing around with chopped onions, eggs, herbs or anything.

My kids LOVE these!

If you're doing burgers or meatballs you can 'hide' a cube of cheese in the middle of the patty/meatball. Lovely & oozy & gooey when you cut into them

stressedHEmum · 12/07/2010 19:42

I've thought of another one that my kids really, really like.

2lb mince
1 onion, finely chopped
4tablespoons seasoned flour

Mix together and then press into a 9x13inch baking pan. It will be very thin. Then scatter another 2 tablespoons of seasoned flour over the top. Bake at 180 for about 20 minutes until cooked through. Cut into squares. You can either serve as is in burger rolls or with potatoes and veg or you can make 1pint of gravy, pour it over the meat and put it back in the oven for a few minutes to let the gravy kind of sink into the squares. This is really good with mash, cabbage and carrots and will feed 6-8 people.
