I'm going to a picnic where there'll be probably twenty plus, a mixtureof adults and children.

Any suggestions as to what would be good to take along for a savoury? I confess I have no burning urge to have made something, although I'm not averse to the idea if it's not too hard. (I am the sort of person who will stress it might go wrong if I am feeding other people.)

TIA

do you want ideas for finger food? Or is it a "posh" picnic with plates and forks?

missorinoco · 06/07/2010 20:10

I was thinking finger food. I don't think it'll be that posh.

Buy some wraps. Fill them with something red or green, plus cream cheese, roll up and then slice into mouthful-sized pieces.

Chicken drumsticks are good. Roast em in a big pan, having marinaded first in soy/honey/whatever floats your boat. Have little bits of foil to wrap round the ends for the non finger lickers.

If you're feeling flash, Waitrose Entertaining do some gorgeous very posh massive pork pie type affairs.

Loads and loads and loads of little cooked sausages too.

cheese straws. Buy 2 packs ready rolled pastry, ready grated cheese (cheddar/mozarella) spread pastry with marmite / pesto to stick cheese on, bung 2nd pastry sheet on top. Brush with egg, chop into straws, bung in oven for about 10 minutes. Bob is your aunts husband.

I was going to suggest drumsticks too. Otherwise you could cook pizza and/or quiche, both ok cold?

aquavit · 07/07/2010 13:58

was going to say quiche too

I do love a good quiche at a picnic

I have noticed that everyone is also extremely pleased when someone brings a bottle or two of something fizzy and cold

What ham is 'nice ham'?

taffetacatski · 07/07/2010 14:42

re Ham :

Stuff thats not processed or pumped full of water - did you see that Jimmy Docherty prog on making square ham - it was gross.

The best ham I guess is the stuff you make yourself at Xmas, eg Nigella's Ham in Coke or with a marmalade and mustard crust. Failing that, I guess its the stuff carved off the bone at delis or at the deli counter.

Marinade chicken drumsticks in a mixture of corange, lemon and lime juice for as long as you can. Chuck them in a roasting pan, stir in some maple syrup and roast until brown and sticky. Easy peasy and very very delicious!

Thankyou.

Picnic pie on the good food web site is easy and looks very smart - can't beat a pie at a picnic.

pot of hummus and things to dip into it - crunchy veggies etc
