What do I do with molasses?

I need to increase my calcium and iron intake with vegan foods and I've heard molasses is a top-notch way to do it.

Is it something I can spread on toast? Melt it into a hot drink? Any suggestions of daily ways to consume 2 tablespoons a day?

Just dip into the jar and eat it straight off the spoon. It's fairly liquid, so not a good candidate for toast, and I can't imagine any drink would improve by adding it.

Make biscuits and flapjacks with it in.

There is a nice MN recipe here.

Also things like home made barbecue sauce have it in.

Thanks! Hey, Beta - you in NZ yet?

I was going to say home made baked beans (google boston baked beans for a recipe) - but that won't get you 2 tablespoons a day
Yummy though.

Speedy - no not gone yet but we have a school lined up and have been given provisional OK by NZ immigration.

We will be going exactly one year fom now when DS1 finishes Yr 6.

On that note I should mention ANZAC biscuits which have Golden Syrup in but I replace that with a variety of treacle and maple syrup as the mood takes me. I am sure mollases would work well.

Oooh, baked beans sound good, Gruffalo fan!

Lots of them have belly pork in, which I realise wouldn't be ideal, and all the proper recipes involve soaking beans for hours, then boiling 'em for more hours. But they do knock Mr Heinz into a cocked hat.

Simple fruit loaf - called (Smith Bun in this house)

8 oz SR Flour
tsp mixed spice
4 oz dried fruit
2 or 3 tablespoons molasses/golden syrup/malt extract or a mix of all 3, go on, experiment!

Mix all together, add milk to make a wet mix, bake in lined greased loaf tim till done.

Sorry for the inaccurate recipe - it's not one I have written down anywhere, it just exists in my head.

My children like a cup of warm milk with a tablespoonful stirred in. It tastes kind of smokey and caramely.

Also, it makes a very delicious dark rye bread, particularly if you also add a couple of spoonfuls of cocoa powder, also full of iron.

Yum! Thanks for all your suggestions, folks. Nice to discover today that it's also rather cheap!
