URGENT: Can I freeze smoked mackerel?

CSLewis · 24/06/2010 14:54

I've got two packets of Lidl's very nice (and very cheap) smoked mackerel in my fridge, with a use by date of TODAY. I wouldn't mind going a couple of days over, but we're going to Wales on Sunday and can't use them up before then. Can I stick them in the freezer? I'm thinking yes, but just wanted to check...

hmmm - not sure - I imagine you probably can.
freeze them and then report back when you defrost them

You can - I have done in the past to no ill effect (and I'm v paranoid about that kind of thing). One thing I would say though is that it is quite moist when you defrost it. My picky DH says he can tell, but taste wise it is exactly the same

I freeze it but use it cooked in my "kedgeree".

Just checked my m&s smoked mackerel packet and it says that it's freezable.

If you can eat mammoth after being frozen for 3 thousand years I imagine mackerel will be fine

LimaCharlie · 24/06/2010 16:33

I freeze it all the time and not managed to kill anyone yet

Great, thanks! I'll try to remember to report back when I defrost it. It'll all get whizzed up into pate anyway, so texture not such an issue.

Yes. I do, but I only ever make pate so I'm not sure about the texture.

It's fine defrosted and eaten, as is smoked salmon, if they are left unopened in their vacuum packs.
