I have decided to take a bit of a culinary tour during the world cup and try to cook a dish from the country of the the evening's match.
Last night was Italy Vs Paraguay, I took the easy option of chicken in parma ham for Italy.
Tonight is Brazil Vs N. Korea so I am attempting a Feijoada.
Tomorrow however is S. Africa Vs Paraguy - any ideas??

No thoughts to offer, but what a great idea

Find some 'Boerewors' (South African coiled sausage) and cook them on the 'braii' (Afrikaans for barbecue)!!

Chil1234 · 15/06/2010 11:36

'braai'...sorry.

NorksDrift · 15/06/2010 11:45

Along the lines of Chil1234's idea, these were delicious.

Found this which sounds quite good...

BOBOTIE

2 tablespoons vegetable oil
2 onions, peeled and sliced
2 1/4 pounds good quality lean ground beef
1 thickish slice of white bread
1 cup milk
1 tablespoon medium curry powder (or hot for the hale and brave)
1 1/2 tablespoons sugar
2 teaspoons salt
freshly grated pepper (about a half teaspoon)
3/4 teaspoon turmeric
1 1/2 tablespoons malt vinegar
1/2 cup seedless raisins
2 tablespoons strong chutney
2 bay leaves (or fresh lemon leaves if available)
2 medium eggs

METHOD

Preheat oven to 350°F.

Heat oil in medium sauté pan. Stir in onions. Cook over medium heat until transparent. Add ground beef.

Cook until lightly browned and crumbly.

Soak bread in half the milk, squeeze out excess milk and mash with a fork ? pour it straight back into remaining milk.

Set milk aside & add bread to the meat mixture.

Add curry, sugar, salt, pepper, turmeric, vinegar, raisins, chutney to the beef mixture. Spoon the mixture into a

Greased baking dish, and place bay leaves on top. Bake for 50-60 minutes in preheated 350°F oven.

Beat egg with remaining milk and pour over mixture approximately 25 - 30 minutes before end of baking time.

YELLOW RICE

2 cups uncooked rice

2 teaspoons cinnamon

salt to taste

1 tablespoon turmeric

1 tablespoon sugar

1 cup seedless raisins (optional)

1 tablespoon butter (or margarine)

water

Add all the ingredients, except the raisins, into a large pot and boil in water for 30 to 40 minutes.

Add the raisins and simmer for 45 - 60 minutes.

Remove from the stove and transfer into a dish. Serve with the Bobotie immediately

Now....North Korea!!!!

Bobotie is really yummy, and definitely a fav with SA's - good choice!

MmeLindt · 15/06/2010 17:36

FAB idea. Will join in, if I may.

I can offer some Swiss recipes for tomorrow and German ones for the final

Itsjustafleshwound · 15/06/2010 17:43

Steak with Monkey gland sauce??

recipe here

MmeLindt · 16/06/2010 20:33

How are you getting on? You really have to honour the Swiss today and have cheese fondue and chocolate cake for tonight's dinner.

Put the paella back in the back of the fridge.

munchkinland · 17/06/2010 15:49

MmeLindt....sorry already been shopping and got the chorizo for a Spanish casserole (can't eat paella as pg so no seafood - and just not the same without it!)

Might have chocolate cake for dessert though - what a good excuse!!

Got posh fish and chips for tomorrow!!

Itsjustafleshwound - that Momkey Gland Sauce sound delicious!!! will def have that for SA's third (hopefully not last) match!!!
