Hi Vegan and vegan-friendly MNetters!

Just wanted to know if anyone was out there and wanted to form a support thread- to talk about food/ veganism, 'stuff' in general.

I am late 30s, have been an on and off vegan for about 6 years, and after a hiatus of about 9 months or so am back 'on'. I adore cooking with a passion, and love reading food blogs and vegan food blogs.

I would very much like to exchange thoughts/tips/frustrations with anyone else out there!

Fascicle yes Iam a wheat avoider and it's extremely difficult as you say -if not impossible- to find ready mades in the H.F. shop without it. So it's a case of making my own from scratch which I have to do 'cos I also avoid palm oil!! hydrogenated or otherwise, talk about making it hard for myself!!!

Here's a funny story; I saw sugar and dairy free marshmallows in H.F. shop and i thought OOH great for my vegan GD's birthday party but guess what was in them? bovine gelatine Shock !!!!

PenguinArmy · 28/02/2012 21:50

In case anyone is around. I'm having a little party thing for DDs 2nd birthday this weekend. Any party food ideas I might not have thought of.

PenguinArmy · 28/02/2012 21:50

oh and needs to be soy free as well

Grockle · 28/02/2012 21:54

Can I join you? I'm an ex-vegan, failed vegetation who now occasionally cooks locally and ethically meat. I'm cutting down in meat again and trying to be more vegan

PenguinArmy · 28/02/2012 21:56

welcome

although this board is rather slow so don't think people are being rude. To sweeten the deal there is a lot of back thread to read through Grin

ppeatfruit · 29/02/2012 10:24

Penguin i've a nice recipe for vegan brownies if you haven't got one which could translate into a cake if you needed it to.?

Grockle I like failed vegetation Grin it sounds a bit like my garden a lot of which has died in the 2 weeks of snow we had!!

NoHunIntended · 01/03/2012 22:38

Just checking in, this fell off my Threads I'm On.

Welcome, Grockle.

Ooh, ppeat, you've made me want marshmallows now!

PenguinArmy · 01/03/2012 22:41

thanks ppeat I'll be doing a chocolate cake but would still be interested in the brownie recipe

hi NoHun hope things are well.

PenguinArmy · 01/03/2012 22:41

erm is there an issues with candles and veganism?

ppeatfruit · 02/03/2012 09:04

I suppose if they're beeswax there's a problem for strict vegans but they're not made with animal fat any more are they? Grin.

Choc brownie recipe;I tend to cook by ear or eye not strict measurements;

100g. flour (I use non wheat spelt or kamut)
100g ground almonds
50g cooking oil (i use olive oil)
100g 70% plain choc.
rice milk to loosen mixture
100g molasses (or 50g. rice syrup and mol. or golden syrup)
large tsp.baking powder
Add whatever walnuts and spices you like. Oil a non stick baking quiche- type tin

Using a large solid saucepan on v. low heat melt the choc. and the oil slowly then add the molasses and or syrups which need to melt as well, now you can mix them also add spices if wanted. Take off heat and mix in the flour and almonds and baking powder using the milk to loosen whole mixture add nuts too. Pour into tin and bake at 180 for half an hour .Check it and if it's too wet replace in oven, Though it SHOULD be wettish in the centre. When ready cool in the tin and then cut in whatever shape you like. These are better a couple of days after cooking.

Just reviving this thread! Where are you all?

Been on a mammoth shoe hunt for toddler DS, there seem to be very few around, as I also needed them to be soft-soled/barefoot style, but finally found some today from the Vivo store on Great Marlborough Street today - and it even says vegan on the box! Woo hoo.

In other news, we are off to Germany for 18 months, maybe more. The times I've been to mainland Europe, I've been disappointed with the options for vegans, though I am sure it will be different living there, I know I can get soya yoghurt and milk, so that's the main thing for us. Hope they have some nice treats stuff to though! Of course, I bake, but sometimes it's nice to be able to just buy stuff!

PenguinArmy · 20/05/2012 12:01

another revival attempt

secretlyahippy · 21/05/2012 13:44

Can I join? I'm currently on maternity leave. I have 3 children. DD1 is 5, DD2 is 3 and DS1 is 6 months. I've been vegetarian since I was a small child and vegan for 2 years. DH eats and enjoys vegan food but will eat meat and dairy.

Can I post my quick 3 min chocolate cake recipe? Its ridiculously easy and lovely.

Get a small bowl (or large coffee cup) and chuck in -
One mashed banana
4 tbsp self raising flour
4 tbsp sugar
2 tbsp cocoa powder
3 tbsp soya milk
3 tbsp rapseed/veg oil
Drop vanilla essence

Mix (I also put in a handful of walnuts but its nice plain too)

Microwave on full power for 3 mins. And eat!

Not particularly healthy but definately hits the chocolate spot!

that sounds yum, may also do this for pudding tonight. Have had a strange bug the last few days and totally wiped out. Have some cheezly lentils in the freezer so they can have that as a dip with popadoms then that for afters.

earlyriser · 21/05/2012 18:00

secretlyahippy oh. my. word, that recipe is amazing! so quick and so yummy, wasn't sure how many it would serve so used my 1 1/2 tablespoon measure and there was plenty for 3-4 helpings. DD had hers with an alpro vanilla pot (like cold custard) and ds with swedish glace ice cream.
Also, surprisingly not too sweet .

secretlyahippy · 21/05/2012 20:02

Glad you liked it! It's the coffee cup chocolate cake recipy that I found on mumsnet and I just modified it to make it vegan. Its also really nice with orange essence so its a chocolate orange cake.

crowface · 22/05/2012 13:19

Hi there, I'm 35 this year with a 1 year old DS and a dh and we're all vegan. Early weanings a doddle as all first baby foods are vegan and now DS just eats what we have in the main, we don't tend to have very sugary/salty food. hubby and I have been vegan for about 4 years.

Ended up buying second hand Clarkes shoes for my little man and am on the look out for econd hand Converse. Just find the prices of new ones ridiculous for how much wear they get.

There's a couple of books I'D recommend, one is by the vegan society and is called, Feedinf your Vegan Infant with Confidence. It's very reassuring.

I have 2 favourite cookery books, one is an out of print vegetarian Thai cook book that hubby bought as a student, and we've used again and again, with no bad recipes! Apart from the odd egg it's vegan. The other one I've used a lot it an Isa Chandra Moskowitz (Post Punk Kitchen and Veganomicon) book of healthy recipes called Apetite for Reduction. Really yummy recipes that have calories, fat, sugars etc counted for you. It also takes into account soya and gluten allergies

Have 2 dogs too, but they're definitely not vegan.

earlyriser · 22/05/2012 16:47

Hello crowface i must admit that finding vegan shoes for my children is the most difficult thing. I haven't worn leather shoes since i was 18 (many moons ago) but have bought for my children when i've felt there was no alternative (although the last school shoes i bought for dd(6) were non leather, from asda, and are surprisingly durable so far!

secret happy to report the choc sponge is even better cold the next day!

PenguinArmy · 22/05/2012 19:54

i made baba ghanoush and falafel for the first time today. Served with cous cous in pitta bread with melon for pudding (we?re out of salad to serve it with).

Luckily DH is clearing up the mess Grin

secretlyahippy · 22/05/2012 20:10

Do any of you know any vegans in RL? I know none except for the very strange lady who works in the health food shop. If you do - how did you meet them?

PenguinArmy · 22/05/2012 20:13

i met some once but they were rather unwelcoming so never approached any again Blush

actually that has happened twice

MrsHelsBels74 · 23/05/2012 20:07

The post punk kitchen is a great online vegan forum, very relaxed & non-judgemental. I'm an ex-vegan but still enjoy good vegan cooking.
I think in any kind of lifestyle choice you get the kinds who want everyone to adopt their way of life & those who really couldn't give a hoot what anyone else does, as long as they're left alone with their choice.
Unfortunately you only tend to hear/see the militant vegans which is why they often get a bad rep.

secretlyahippy · 23/05/2012 20:29

I would like to meet some other vegans. My dh is very supportive but on the occassion that I do say I'm vegan - people look at me as if I landed from another planet. Cominmg from a strong farming community probably doesn't help!!!

PenguinArmy · 23/05/2012 20:40

Grin I imagine not. I went out with someone once from posh farming country. made for a interesting summer when i stayed especially as i am from a council estate as well
