Hi Vegan and vegan-friendly MNetters!

Just wanted to know if anyone was out there and wanted to form a support thread- to talk about food/ veganism, 'stuff' in general.

I am late 30s, have been an on and off vegan for about 6 years, and after a hiatus of about 9 months or so am back 'on'. I adore cooking with a passion, and love reading food blogs and vegan food blogs.

I would very much like to exchange thoughts/tips/frustrations with anyone else out there!

OP posts:

My DH is vegan. DS is nearly 14 months, and being raised vegan. I won't accommodate non-vegan food in our home.

Plamil, great mayo, but revolting chocolate. Do not, under any circumstances, try their carob bar. Eurgh!

PenguinArmy · 06/12/2011 21:03

Too late

with each passing month DH becomes more vegan. I found 14 months easier as she was still a good eater and BF then. He knows I won't have anything brought for DD that isn't vegan and my family are great until DD goes begging them for food. He actually hates the fact that when we visit the ILs they practically try and stuff meat down him because 'he must be missing it' when really he doesn't. I think I'll try and push DH another step forward, he's had soy milk all this week so maybe I can try and keep that up.

earlyriser · 06/12/2011 21:03

Ha ha, that's exactly what i think of Plamil! But they are a worthy company and i do love their mayo.

If you are having trouble getting stuff, i totally recommend a visit to www.goodnessdirect.co.uk they are an online health food shop, and stock loads more variety than you might find in the likes of a small Holland and Barrett shop. If you google them and voucher, then there is a strong possibility you will find a £10 off voucher for them too.

Plus, delivery is always very quick (next day or day after usually)

HoHoHoFunIntended · 07/12/2011 20:30

That's great, penguin, just need to get the PILs to back off. I am very lucky that DH was vegan for many years before we met, and his parents are supportive (and positively great about getting special lovely things in for us when we visit. They even eat vegan suppers when we visit too).

earlyriser, have you tried the carob bar though? We had to spit it out it was so utterly vile. The mayo is lush though! Mmm!

earlyriser · 07/12/2011 21:36

Carob = yuck in my book, when i first turned vegan, there wasn't a lot of chocolate about and bless my mother, this is what she would buy me every xmas/birthday/special occasion. Bleugh. I had forgotton how gads it was until i got a free sample of carob snowmen with my goodness direct order in feb, had to spit them out too

I wanted to send them a wee note saying 'I may be vegan but please don't insult my tastebuds by sending me that crap' Grin

PenguinArmy · 07/12/2011 22:06

I met someone today at playgroup who on finding out we were vegans (I had taken breakfast out with me) then tried to say that DD was small due to being vegan Angry but then compared to a huge (as in more than one chin) 17 month old as an example of her being too small.

What was dinner for everyone so I can steal ideas. We had veggies, beans, spices and wraps. Was very yummy if I say so myself but used the newborn excuse and employed a shop brought spice packet

HoHoHoFunIntended · 07/12/2011 22:13

:) It is gross, can't believe anyone really likes it! I don't like dark chocolate either. Are you Scottish? We will probably move to Scotland in a couple of years.

Penguin, print her off these: gorilla and protein!

HoHoHoFunIntended · 07/12/2011 22:14

I made a noodle thing with veg and tofu, simple and yum!

PenguinArmy · 07/12/2011 22:18

Oh, I cba with her, just said she was small well before solids got into her, she wouldn't have walked so early (8.5months) if she was ill (I find mentioning that to those who show of being big normally shuts them up as they're almost showing off) and she is infact nearly up to 25th percentile so not that small anymore. Like those links though Xmas Grin

We've booked a holiday to Scotland in April but I keep looking at all the snow covered mountains and want to go munro bagging already.

PenguinArmy · 07/12/2011 22:18

any flavourings and how was the tofu done?

HoHoHoFunIntended · 07/12/2011 23:40

I love the snow, hope we get some down here!

Coarse ground black pepper, garlic, soy sauce. I cubed and fried the tofu so it was nicely browned. Delicious!

earlyriser · 08/12/2011 09:30

We had lentil soup with rice to bulk it up. Ds won't usually touch the stuff but he insisted we buy croutons and i said only to put in soup. So we did and he even ate all the soup (unheard of!)

Yes to being scottish. Where are you going on hols Penguin? April has been a lovely month for the past few years so you may be lucky and get some fine weather for hill walking.

Did you say your DH was scottish Ho (hmmm maybe shouldn't be calling you that!)? Where abouts (or 'far aboots' as we say up here) is he from? We are up in the north east and battening down the hatches for this afternoon, although it is already very windy.

CakeandRoses · 08/12/2011 09:33

you're all here!! hands vegan eggnog round

will catch up properly when i have more time later but lovely to see you all again

CakeandRoses · 08/12/2011 09:34

and remind me to tell you about my ohsoclever easy burritos when i'm back Smile

HoHoHoFunIntended · 08/12/2011 12:43

Hi, early, DH is from Fife. His parents now live in the Outer Hebrides, and they have snow already, I am sooo envious! I would like to move up there (Scotland, not necessarily the Outer Hebs), and unless DH gets a job that takes us elsewhere, we will probably move to Scotland (from London) in a couple of years. I would like to have another baby down here, from this house, as we had a homebirth which I'd like again, if possible, but I am near enough three hospitals, on a big main road with great ambulance access, whereas when/if we move to Scotland, I'd like us to be a bit more rural and therefore probably not close enough to a hospital for my liking, or maybe even within the care of a hospital that promotes or can support homebirth. Plus I had a fantastic midwife to deliver DS, so am hoping to get her again, should we be lucky enough to have another baby or two! Dunno, all a bit up in the air, but I still love looking on RightMove for a nice house up there! :) I love the accents, would love the DC to speak like DH!

Nice to see you back, cakey. Tell us about your ohsoclever easy burritos!

PenguinArmy · 08/12/2011 14:24

We're going to the Ben Lawers area, figure some easy mountains to get me back after 2 DCs in 2 years. Hope it is mild as may have to take DS in a sling. 2 shortish days on my own finishing them off and then 3 days with the family exploring the area.

I need to think about tonight's dinner

CakeandRoses · 08/12/2011 21:29

ah tis a scottish theme going on, is it? and we're off to the borders for new year there will be an uneven distribution of vegans with us all up there Grin

penguin have you tried quinoa flakes for dd? they cook v quickly so you can chuck them into all sorts.

will she eat beans? my two love them in all sorts of dishes. also peas are good.

my burritos....

just fry some garlic, paprika, grated courgette, boiled rice (if i'm in a rush i used the frozen, steamer bags, iykwim?), aduki beans or whatever beans you like (from a tin), pease pudding (i know! but it makes a great refried beans substitute without chili) add some boillon powder and boiling water.

chuck into wraps and add lettuce and grate vegan cheese on top - you can add salsa or guacamole but not essential.

wrap up and eat.

takes literally minutes but are v yum and nutritious. the DCs love them.

CakeandRoses · 09/12/2011 08:07

these are my new fave muffins: happyfoody.com/2009/05/07/apple-pie-crumb-cake-muffins/. they're a bit more fiddly to make than normal muffins but not hard and the effort's worth it.

i used apple juice not cider
i don't bother peeling the apples tho grate them to the peel iykim?
i make a bit of extra topping as i like it lots! it's not as crumbly as you'd expect

PenguinArmy · 09/12/2011 20:16

tonight's dinner: onion and more green veggies, frozen sweetcorn etc. in the wok, once mostly cooked add boiled potatoes, aduki beans, lemon juice and cook for bit longer. Serve with a red wine vinegar, olive oil, french mustard, SnP dressing.

I don't always carry on cooking the potatoes just do the two bits separate, we call it hot green potato salad.

PenguinArmy · 09/12/2011 20:19

Will DD eat beans? At the moment no Xmas Grin, also no to small grains (rice, quinoa etc.) lentils (but will in tarka dal when they are broken down). Ahh, she'll get there. Hard to believe there was a time when she ate most things. Bean burgers are 50:50.

CakeandRoses · 09/12/2011 21:07

i wonder if she'd eat pease pudding then?

PenguinArmy · 12/12/2011 18:58

we tried it today, no luck but she's ill and is off food. Was yummy though, thanks for the suggestion. I did pre-cooked yellow split peas, then added onion, tumeric, coriander and garam masala with lemon juice and tomato puree cooked for about another 10mins until more of a creamy texture. Served with veggies mixed with rice and roasted aubergine.

CakeandRoses · 12/12/2011 20:22

ooh that does sound yum.

i did a nut roast for a big sunday roast for friends yday which i dont do often. went down very well with everyone inc 3 children.

made this carrot cake too:www.grouprecipes.com/44964/best-vegan-carrot-cake.html twas veh yumdiddly. think i'll make it again in place of xmas cake which none of us are mad keen on

CakeandRoses · 12/12/2011 20:22

and hope dd is feeling better soon.

PenguinArmy · 23/12/2011 22:55
