'Miniature' dinner party - suggestions?

frakkit · 10/06/2010 14:33

I'm doing a miniature themed dinner party (yes, theme, naff, I know) so I want to do mini servings of things. I realise this doubles the cooking I have to do but I can't think up another sensible theme. Plus I have lots of mini moulds and mini food has that 'nouvelle cuisine' idea.

So for my starter I'm doing 3 miniature bread thingys:

a mini bruschetta
a mini honey roasted goast cheese toast thing
????

I'm totally stuck for miniatures for the main. That may have to be miniature in presentation.

For dessert:

miniature moulded sorbets, minature lemon cupcake and ???? I'm thinking some kind of miniature blind baked pastry case filled with something?

Then thankfully miniature chocolates are easy!

I'm not in the UK so am slightly limited on ingredients but please throw any ideas you have at me!!!

Starter - shot glass of prawn cocktail?

Main - Mini yorkshire puddings for main with slice of beef, dollop of horseradish?

Pud - mini cheesecake!

Sounds all yummy and not at all naff!!!!

Good luck!!!

Will you all be starving at the end of it????

cyteen · 10/06/2010 14:39

Mini burgers and cones of chips.

frakkit · 10/06/2010 14:41

BrownPaper - no-one eats at these sodding things anyway! It's all about how poncy innovative you can be and so people can come and nose around your home.

The last one I went to the poor hostess had loads of food left, her kids were probably eating it for a week.

Serve everyone Midget Gems and shots

frakkit · 10/06/2010 14:48

"Serve everyone Midget Gems and shots "

That's actually a genius plan.....They'll be too drunk/high on sugar to notice the fact I haven't cooked anything!

quails eggs. they are quite small aren't they?

thumbwitch · 10/06/2010 14:52

get beef fillet that you would normally cut into medallions and do it as a miniature roast - so mini-slices of roast beef. With mini yorkshires, baby carrots & turnips (or other baby veg)

Get a bunch of partridges, take the legs and wings off - mini drumsticks and wings! Probably best not fried like chicken though, might be a bit tough - might have to roast them as well.

Get a rabbit - do rack of rabbit rather than rack of lamb (mini chops)

Fish? You could poach sardines instead of a salmon, and do the cucumber scale thing with cornichons instead (hard work, mind)

Can't think of any more off the top of my head.

BrownPaperandString · 10/06/2010 15:17

wouldn't it be easier to traffic lights?

e.g. a red starter, yellow main course and a green pud?

thumbwitch · 10/06/2010 15:25

or a green starter, yellow main and red pud might be easier...

GreatOrmondSt · 10/06/2010 15:35

I think the mini roast sounds lovely! I was going to suggest mini burgers too and what about mini quiches or mini pizzas? Isn't the minature foods thing a celeb diet; eat what you want but just a smaller version? Sounds good to me!

Bake some baby new potatoes. Cut an X in the top (as you do with normal baked potatoes) and top with a little butter and parsley, or cream cheese and chives maybe.

Cocktail sausages (naice ones, obv.), perhaps with a mustardy dip.

TheBoyWithaSORNedMX5 · 10/06/2010 15:51

Dinky little stuffed cherry toms - stuffed with, ummm, stuff.

posieparker · 10/06/2010 15:53

Mini tpoad in the hole, mini parsnips with a honey and mustard sauce. Mini tarts, mini ceasar salad (one leaf, one bit of sauce and anchovy fillet inside, along with toasted parmasan crumbs).

TheBoyWithaSORNedMX5 · 10/06/2010 16:10

Whitebait, with something. (I really am terribly helpful aren't I, with my stuff and somethings....!)

Actually yes - whitebait with those dinky baked potatoes (and chivey sour cream stuff or something), and cherry toms stuffed with some kind of pinenutty stuffing. If you can get some, baby asparagus would be cute. Or baby aubergines. But I think the three things would be enough and you don't want to over complicate the way the plate look. You'd want some baby salad leaves, too.

Oh oh oh! Micro herbs!!! You need some! Grow some if you have time. They'll look better than chopped up normal herbs I reckon.

With the puds - can you get kumquats for the garnish?

AlaskaNebraska · 10/06/2010 16:11

little mini men naked in mini pants

AlaskaNebraska · 10/06/2010 16:12

a tiny baked bean on a cocktail stick as a canape

MrsTicklemouse · 10/06/2010 16:48

main poussin? its a mini chicken but a proper portion!!!

taffetacat · 10/06/2010 19:26

micro herbs a brilliant idea also micro leaves do a weeny salad with a weeny balsamic drizzle

eeny weeny baked vanilla cheesecake with a blueberry on top, tichy wichy panna cotta with a redcurrant on top

at a German wedding I went to they had what looked like ice cram cones as a canape but were in fact crisp corn tortillas filled with a kind of creamy fishy thing. yuuuuuum.

posieparker · 10/06/2010 19:47

What about crayfish thermadore?

TheBoyWithaSORNedMX5 · 11/06/2010 09:49

Yes crayfish - great idea!

I think the minimen would be cute too, with or without pants

They might be good with coffee.

I do like the sound of the fish icecream cones (obv. would be preferable for people to know they were fish - could be an unpleasant surprise if you were expecting vanilla!).

TheBoyWithaSORNedMX5 · 11/06/2010 11:57

Dinky crayfish thermador, a small handful of whitebait and a baby coquillle St Jacques, a bit like this only made to look like this, garnished with baby leaves and micro herbs. And a little stuffed cherry tom or two for a bit of colour (with the pinenutty type stuffing).

Perhaps some teeeeeny shrimp kebabs, with dinky squares of pepper, quartered cherry toms. Ramekins with a mash-topped fish pie made of dinky shrimp, baby scallops, and fish. Or you could make little Stargazy Pies with whitebait! But that might be madness.

I will go away soon, promise

racingheart · 11/06/2010 22:59

what about mini chicken satays on sticks with dippy peanut sauce?

Starter: shot glasses of gazpacho or mint and pea soup or other summery soup?

Or mini caesar salads - bacon, qualis egg and garlic croutons on individual little gem lettuce leaves.

I sometimes work for a caterer and the clients fave food by far is the mini yorkshires with roast beef and horseradish, as a couple of other people have suggested.

Sausages on sticks with a grain mustard mash dip also goes down well. (the men do eat at these things< I think.

You could also do a mini popadom with a single chunk of lamb curry and teaspoon of cucumber and mint raita on it.

It's a lot of work - don't envy you.

BecauseImWorthIt · 11/06/2010 23:02

Mini beans on toast?

Tip beans into a sieve.

Cut up slices of toast into cubes.

Arrange 3-4 beans on each cube, pour a puddle of sauce on to the plate and arrange a couple of cubes of toast on the top.

frakkit · 13/06/2010 12:23

May I just say I love you all...

That's my next 5 hateful themed dinner parties sorted!
