i was at the drop in clinic yesterday afternoon and my DD was faaaaar bigger than the other kids her age.

they all weighed about 16 17 pounds, she was just over 20!

midwife just said to watch what shes eating, and maybe cut down the jar a little?? she has a very healthy diet, no fatty foods, im alwasy careful on what i give her, but theres no way im putting her on some sort of diet! thats kinda the way the midwife came across.
wont she burn it off the more active she gets??

i know its a bit of a silly thread, to suggest my 8 month old is over weight but just been thinking about it all morning, just how big and chubby she looked yesterday.. but babies are meant to be chunky arnt they? she loves her food, but theres no way im over feeding her, she always lets me know when shes full.

just wodnering if theres any mums out there whos 8 month olds or close to that are about the same??x

I got told to put my 6 month old on a diet .

Needless to say I ignored the advice. If you are worried, or think it is possible there maybe a problem, speak to your GP about it. HV's are obsessed with those stupid charts. I find GP's to be slightly more sensible and more concerned with the actual baby, than how they look on a chart.

My over weight 6 month old is now a very healthy, very active 3 year old. There are no concerns about her weight or diet.

Don't worry about it. Babies often go through a chubby phase before they start crawling. DS1 was ever such a chunky little thing at that age. Now he's 4.6 and he eats well but he's not overweight. Lots of people told me the same thing, that there dcs were chubby for a bit. I stopped getting DS3 weighed a couple of months ago because the hv was murmuring formula because he wasn't conforming to the graphs. He's fine

phew! its the chart that scared me, she went a bit above average, and she asked me infront of the other mums there what i fed her, it was embarrasing!
shes a cute chunky monkey and i dont think i do anything differently or things i shouldnt be doing.

im not going to go back for a few weeks, she wants to make sure DD isnt putting on too much weight, but im nervous about it now, theres noway im going to put her on a diet, isnt that ina way some sort of child abuse!
shes just started running in her walker so im thinking she will start to burn off some baby fat then surely xx

ds was just over 20 lbs when he started weaning at 23weeks and never got any adverse comments from the hv. He was also quite long so was in proportion.

mdDD is quite short me and my partner are short so she almost looks kinda short and chunky lol, very cute in my eyes x

Ignore your HV! I just checked my chart and your DD is somewhere between 50th & 75th centile. ie she's average! My GP was more sensible when I asked about my DD's weight. He said he doesn't worry about children's weight until they're much older (3, 4). By this time, most children are really active and burn it off. Prior to that, as long as they're offered a varied diet, they'll eat what they need and hold on to the weight they need. Silly HV!

glasgowmandy · 10/06/2010 13:06

thankyou, ive always thought she would burn it off.. and the old saying of babyfat? im sure its very common for most to be even bugger right? and still healthy.
im not going to weigh her for a while now, shes started running about in her walker so ill give it a few weeks, see what she is then.
ive never liked my HV shes a snotty nosed cow to be honest and dosnt ever seem to listen to me or really care what ive got to say.

My DD was and still is over 90th centile. I obsessed over weighing her for the 1st year, ironically because at 6 weeks she had failed to gain any weight. I topped her up with formula on the insistence of the HV and then 6 months later was being told to be careful how much she ate!

What they didn't take into consideration was that she is well over 90th centile for height too. She's now 2 and though she towers over her peers and is therefore heavier than them, she is perfectly in proportion and more importantly, eats a brilliant and varied diet.

Let your baby take the lead on this, she knows loads more than the HV, she just can't tell you.

vedry true tingle thanks. she was premature when she was born adn weighed 6 pounds then went down to 5,3 by the time we came down, so i just figure she's making up for it now! lol x
