Friends for Afternoon Tea

Hi All,

On a whim (I heart stationary!!) I purchased some coaster type invites for Afternoon Tea.

Now, I am a keen baker and love the whole afternoon tea thing but have never done it at my house, just when we've been on hols etc.

We have a few friends with very young children and I thought it might be a nice thing to do one Sunday during the summer but do you think....

A) They will think I am mental and it is a bit toffee nosed?
B) That they will think it will be a far too unhealthy afternoon for their dc's?

x

no I think as a treat it is great

4merlyknownasSHD · 04/06/2010 10:02

Great idea. Much better than lunch because you don't have to worry if their kids don't like spinach or peas or fish or red meat or.....
If you provide some jam tarts, chocolate brownies, cucumber sandwiches, cheese sandwiches etc., there will be something for everyone.

You can also sit outside when the real heat of the midday sun has gone.

Littlefish · 04/06/2010 10:06

Oh I think it's a lovely idea! I've had friends round for afternoon tea before now and it's been fantastic.

I would make:

Chocolate brownies
Scones with cream and jam
Cheese straws
Sandwiches with the crusts cut off (preferably triangles)
Fresh strawberries
Mini quiches
Lemon cakes

etc. etc. etc.

(Please will you invite me - I'd definitely come!0

missorinoco · 04/06/2010 10:08

I think it would be a great idea. Agree a few sandwiches too and then if their children don't eat dinner later it doesn't matter. Actually, no, really I just like the idea of cucmber sandwiches with my afternoon tea.

I wish you were my friend.

MoonFaceMama · 04/06/2010 10:44

Sounds lovely!

I agree with littlefish, sandwiches should be triangles, they taste better!

I suggest eclairs or profiter rolls. Choux pastry is so much easier than people think...they'll be impressed!

Also if you don't have one this is a great excuse to buy another cake stand! Ikea do a lovely three tier plane glass one for about a tenner. Fruit can live on it the rest of the time. So it's really usefull actually...

FickleFairy · 04/06/2010 12:33

Oooooh you have made me all excited now!

Eclairs and Profiteroles are a staple in this house as they are my fave and I have loads of cake stands etc so I am feeling even more of an excuse to do it!

Oh I would love to be invited to something like that.

I would make lots of things - all mini size.

BikeRunSki · 04/06/2010 12:40

My "mummy" friends did this recently and bought a dish each, only rule was that it had to be home made (except for one girl who really can not cook, she . I did triangle sandwhiches with no crusts - a mix of white and brown, cucumber, smoked salmon, philly and tomato and egg and cress. I used nice sliced bread and real butter. They went down a storm!

The Ikea three tier cake stand was £5 when I was in Ikea earlier this week.

FickleFairy · 04/06/2010 12:46

I am also in the process of setting up a 'Cake Club' too. It was meant to happen 3 weeks ago with 6 girl friends but I was ill and it was meant to be at my house as it was the first week but I had to cancel.

This is a great excuse for the girls to get together one evening once every couple of months.

I think it's a brilliant idea, was pondering similar myself, but like you was worried that folk might think it a bit poncey. Also fancy doing a "brunch", hesitating for same reason

DastardlyandSmugly · 04/06/2010 14:37

OOh I also love brunch - especially a Mexican one.

Littlefish · 04/06/2010 16:04

There are a group of us who regularly meet for Brunch. Pre-dc we had lots of late dinner parties, but now we've all got dc, it makes much more sense to meet at about 9.30am at someone's house (particularly in the summer). The host makes bacon sandwiches etc. and we get a chance to chat while the children play.

MoonFaceMama · 04/06/2010 16:37

lilolil don't know what it's like where you are but on this side of the pennines there's no such thing as brunch!

bikerunski i am gutted by your ikea-cake-stand- price-slash-shocker! Could have used that money for wine housekeeping!

Once did profiter rolls, filled with cream and served with a bowl of melted maya gold to dunk them it... Yum!

lilolilmanchester · 04/06/2010 17:14

not sure that there is here tbh moonface but I quite fancy the idea of having friends round for a breakfast/lunch buffet. Great excuse to have a mid-morning Bucks Fizz get-together

MoonFaceMama · 04/06/2010 17:59

Ah, well, if there's booze i could be convinced. Though we'd have to call it binner.

taffetacat · 04/06/2010 23:10

What a great thread. I consider myself a baker but have never tried choux pastry.

I love the idea of using a 3 tier cake stand for fruit. Brilliant. May reignite the DC's interest. Am thinking artistically draped grapes etc.

I also love the idea of Cake Club. OP - go for it, sounds brilliant. Your guests will be thrilled.
