Petits Filous & baby yoghurts

are there any yoghurts suitable for babies? DH has just pointed out the petits filous i've been feeding our DS has a stupidly high sugar content.

how old is baby

You can get organic yoghurts without all that crap in. Yeo Valley do them and I think Sainsburys used to do their own version as well.

oopsandbabycoconut · 31/05/2010 17:02

Yeo valley do a first yoghurt which is fruit juice sweetened but you can just buy pots of plain yoghurt and add your own fruit - cheaper and you know exactly what you are giving him.

Smash09 · 31/05/2010 17:14

I'd second oopsandbaby and say that it works out well to buy full fat plain/greek yoghurt and add your own blended fruit - or tbh, serve it plain if he'll take it. It's lovely that way too!

If you do add fruit - I like using peaches or plums and just mashing with a fork when nice and ripe - you could microwave them for a few seconds to soften enough, too.

Also, if you boil dried apricots or any dried fruit in a teeny bit of water it makes a lovely compotey thing that is great hot or cold with yoghurt

Smash09 · 31/05/2010 17:15

For the record I do still give my girls (and myself!) the odd petits filous... there's just something about them isn't there!

BosomsByTheSea · 31/05/2010 17:18

mmmmmmmmm Total Greek yoghurt with raspberries, blueberries or strawberries mashed in is gorgeous. (sometimes I even let the kids have some )

eleanorgrace · 31/05/2010 17:41

he's nearly 9 months - will be getting some plain yoghurt and adding my own fruit, why didn't i think of that before! thank you!
maybe i could defrost some frozen summer fruits and mix that with plain / greek yoghurt? i would opt for greek yoghurt as i prefer it (sweet tooth!) but should i try DS on plain yoghurt?

There's one called little stars I think. It only has about 5 ingredients. All good.

Eglu · 31/05/2010 17:46

I would just say that since you've been feeding petit filous, you may have a problem getting him to take greek yoghurt at first as he will be used to the sweetness.

BosomsByTheSea · 31/05/2010 18:59

greek yog is plain - just creamier. No sugar in it.

grumpypants · 31/05/2010 19:01

ds loved plain yoghurt and fruit purees. is now lost to the world of chocolate nesquik pouches

EdgarAllenPoll · 31/05/2010 19:06

greek yoghurt..lovely, fatty and free of crap. 74p from Asda a well. I just managed to get DD to eat strawberries willingly by mixing them in...

MrsKitty · 31/05/2010 19:06

Little Rachels have no added sugar. Plum baby do fromage frais with no sugar. Little Yeos have just started doing yogurt/fromage frais with no added sugar too (check the packet though as some of them do) And none of these products have any artificial sweetner in them - just dairy + fruit puree.

fairylights · 31/05/2010 19:07

i was like you with my first dc - religiously tried to avoid sugar and did only give him only greek yog with fruit or fruit puree til he was really quite old but now my 9 month old dd has never tasted such refinement and has the same little star yogurts as her older brother . hey ho

AliGrylls · 31/05/2010 19:08

I usually gave DS greek yoghurt with a bit of golden syrup and banana or other fruit (stupidly high in calories but he was very underweight). When I was feeling lazy he did get the occasional petit filou or yeo valley - it didn't seem to affect his love of greek yoghurt. Give the greek yoghurt a go and see wht happens.

MrsJamin · 31/05/2010 19:11

Fannypriceless, you've been taken in by marketing! One of the ingredients to muller little stars is sugar! Just because there's hardly any ingredients doesn't mean that it's totally fine for a baby.

BertieBotts · 31/05/2010 19:13

DS used to like greek yoghurt, with fruit or without. I didn't find it needed sweetening at all

I also developed a taste for greek yoghurt with spicy food so DS quite often ended up eating chilli, with yoghurt (just mixed more yoghurt into his portion to take the heat out) and then more yoghurt with banana for pudding - we did BLW, so he was COVERED!

bacon · 31/05/2010 21:00

I never bothered with the baby sized yogurts. Just went straight for the standards pots.

I agree about the sugar. I dont quite get how they get away with it.

I did read that a lot of sugar and dairy together can make a baby very mucus too.

I buy Rachels, Yeo and own brands organic. I also make up my own from plain yogurts.

MrsKitty · 01/06/2010 04:32

Mmmmm - we love greek yogurt with chilli too, Bertie - and with curry. Yum.

debka · 01/06/2010 06:42

My DD eats a big bowl of Greek yoghurt mixed with fruit or smoothie if we're feeling lazy every night. One of those titchy petit filous things would never be enough for her! (she's 14mo).
