I have trouble measuring things in cups - is there a fool proof way to do it??

I have a jug that measures in cups but I find that when I'm measuring dry stuff like flour or sugar, I can't really tell when it's on the line and I end up with seemingly lots more or less than I probably should have.

Is there a better way??

use an actual smallish coffee cup
as long as the proportions are the same it shouldn't matter too much

what a fantastic idea - thank you!

I would buy US measuring cups from eBay, Amazon or a cookshop. Mine are invaluable, especially as I cook a lot of recipes from US cookbooks and the Internet. Mine are metal and I've had them for years, but don't think they were that expensive.

Tesco have measure cups which are great and not expensive or use a cup as PenelopePitstops has said

To check that the cup is an ok size fill the jug to one cup with water and see which mug/cup you have that is nearest in volume
