A piece of fruit every day, who thinks this is a good idea

Following on from the "do you give sweets" thread I realised that my DS's do not eat enough fresh fruit (besides bananas). This is because I am too lazy to enforce it. I do make sure they have veggies everyday but this is easier because we have them with our evening meal on a daily basis.

I am going to give both of my children a piece of fresh fruit every day from now on and will keep a record on here.

If anybody else wants to join that'd be great.

Size of fist?

TracyK · 08/08/2005 11:16

yes tinned fruit counts as long as its not in syrup. I find it easier to have tinned fruit or frozen fruit for smoothies as backups as fruit goes off/ is eating too quickly.

When we were kids we used to make ourselves sugar sandwiches - nothin else but sugar in them!

I get my kids to eat lots of fruit by serving it cut up with custard and giving them chocolate srpinklys wo decorate it with.
They also eat it as it comes of course but its good for pudding!

having looked at the list I actually dont feel so bad.

yesterday for example:

DS's had chopped up banana on their dinner (satay chicken)
A large bowl of tinned fruit in fruit juice for desert
A snack of a dried fruit in the evening
Plenty of 100% fruit juice

This is actually quite a bad day because they would normally have veg with supper, a banana, fruit juice and dried fruit in a day.

So we are not as close to scurvy as I had imagined

My ds usually has a banana with cereal for breakfast, and often has fruit as his dessert for lunch or tea.
I try to ring the changes so we buy plums, apricots and peaches as well as strawberries in the summer. DS adores raspberries too (but V expensive)
I think it does become a problem if you just offer a boring apple every time.

If we go out for the day I take grapes or an apple as a snack for him, and dried apricots and raisins are good too.

And I have to say that even as an adult, I prefer fruit prepared, such as sliced up apple or pear, given a choice.

Funny this thread started today, we have just got back from shopping this morning, laden down with loads of friut. The children enjoy most fruits, I always try to include at least one with their breakfast. Usually that's a banana, strawberries or grapes.

Usually at school they have a mid-morning snack of fruit, so rather than slip into a routine of offering them both milk & a biscuit, I am trying to stick to the fruit at home too.

TBH, it's me that doesn't eat it!! I just don't seem to get the chance. Si a new resolution all round in the dingle house. Today I have had 1 banana, andjust made myself a large glass of pure orange juice, blended with strawberries and blue berries! I have been told blueberries are very good for you. Anyone know if you can tray freeze blueberries?? They are half price in tesco ATM!

gingerbear · 08/08/2005 14:53

2 apples
1 banana
2 nectarines

Fruit and veg drive is going well. I have managed to get my older son to eat his 5 portions (if not more) of fruit and veg in a day. DS2 is a bit more picky at the moment because he is teething but I am offering fruit after every meal and as snacks and make sure he has at least one veg with dinner.

I have also decided to take my own advice and am trying to eat 3 pieces of fruit a day.
