Buying cheap isnt value for money

I did a shop in Aldi last week and bought some frozen fish. A pack of salmon - I cant remember what I paid for it - anyway there was only x4 fillets in there 400g including the water. Bloody ell, they are on the draining board (defrosted) the portion would just about feed my baby! I'm not sure what to do with them now, just far too small to grill. Just no-where comparable to a fresh portion.

Whats the point of buying them? I see no cost saving at all. I had to take 3 out and now they have shrunk really the whole pack would just about feed me and the OH.

seems a bit strange that they wouldn't be portion size. Are you comparing them to ones you'd get at other supermarkets?
I have just weighed a pollack portion and it weighs 125g frozen so 400g for 4 does seem a lot less.
you know you can cook them straight from frozen?

Make salmon pasta? Do you have cream, and some parmesan?

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 26/05/2010 00:04

You could use it in a kedgeree or similar?

dont buy 'cheap' food, tis a lie and a waste of money

Pomi · 26/05/2010 11:52

Aldi Piza was also a waste of money for me.

RunforFun · 26/05/2010 11:55

Interesting as a friend is just trying to persuade me to try our local Aldi.

She thinks some things are just as good and why pay more just because its labelled.

I'm not convinced.

I've always found it a hard balance to find TBH - cheap but possibly poor quality, or more expensive but can't afford as much.

Having said that sometimes the extra expense is a total con - just as much water, salt, sugar etc.

MathsMadMummy · 26/05/2010 12:02

we have a Lidl near us but I haven't used it as the stuff my family/friends bought from there was horrible.

I used to be a bit of a snob when it came to food but after we got our own place it was Asda/Tesco or nothin'!

luciemule · 26/05/2010 12:15

can highly recommend Lidl family size chilled lasagne. It's only about £3 and feeds 4 easily with salad too. You couldn't make your own as cheaply.

i think it's v much a case of being aware of what's actually available in all your local supermarkets so you can get your bargains accordingly!
ime of aldi it's great for veg esp spuds, dairy, bread etc and also sells fab dark choc at a fraction of the price of everywhere else
i wasn't surprised to hear about the fish tho,i bought a lobster from there hoping to treat dp and myself to a thermidore starter one night, needless to say the scraps that i picked out of it wouldn't have even been a starter for 1!

It was ok I did a pasta creamy thing but my point is there was no difference in cost. I could of bought some value pieces at sainsburys probably cheaper. I usually buy fresh or taste the difference.

I needed the whole pack to feed the both of us! I laughed how tiny the portions were.

Some things are great value there - the veg is very good but it doesnt have dates on it so you dont know how long its been hanging around.

I bought french ham but once it was opened it started going off so I had to chuck it - that was good value.

Little things like biscuits are good too. But even so I still spent loads in there and really what I'm saying is it was such a good choose.

I did buy some chocolate in there and it was discusting but then me and the OH are Lindt finatics!

The Lidl near me sells locally grown fruit and veg so it's really fresh and hasn't been hanging around in transit for as long as other stuff.

Lidl Pizzas are vile, but lots of stuff is great as with Aldi, you have to get to know it.

I think both their prices have rocketed since I first discovered them many moons ago when the teens were in nappies. A friend pointed me in their direction, their nappies were brilliant and at that time were a fraction of the price of Pampers etc. Not sure about now, I haven't checked them out lately . In those days (lol) their staples, rice, pasta, pulses, baked beans, tomatoes etc were almost nothing, definitely not the case now, you can get them in Sainsbo's at the same price.
