Summer garden party, cold soup shots (am thinking Vichyssoise), would you like that?

Somehting more bloody mary-ish would be more to my taste

overmydeadbody · 20/05/2010 07:17

chilled beetroot soup would be pretty, until someone spills it down their cream dress

it's gotta be alcohol free though, or I'd do bloody marys

Don't fancy it personally, but I'm not right sophisticated

taczilla · 20/05/2010 07:30

I went to a wedding in Spain and we has Gazpacho in shot glasses 'twas yummy.

overmydeadbody · 20/05/2010 07:40

I tihnk part of the problem is that I don't fancy it personally either, but the party hosts have mentioned it as a possibility

Never mind about their creamdress with the beetroot, it's your_ carpet you've got to worry about!

witchwithallthetrimmings · 20/05/2010 09:34

I think some of the guests would love it, (but think you need something strong rather than creamy for it to work) but others wouldn't. I'd do enough for 70% of your party and pass round something else as well.

BallpointPen · 20/05/2010 09:40

An amuse bouche kinda thing? Not really a starter, bit stingey.

Someone did that on come dine with me not long ago. Think they did a gazpacho.

CMOTdibbler · 20/05/2010 09:48

I quite like them as part of pre starter starter sort of things, but wouldn't be amused as an actual starter

Has to be a totally smooth soup to work

oliviacrumble · 20/05/2010 10:40

Definitely a pre-starter, imo.

Not a personal favourite (I find a thin line between mmm, unusual and delicious, and gag-inducing).

Must be smooth and intensely flavoured to work, as one little shot won't give the palate time to appreciate subtleties.

taffetacat · 20/05/2010 10:46

I would say vichyssoise doesn't have an intense enough flavour to work well as an amuse bouche outdoors.

I'd go gazpacho or something with chilli or truffle in - something with strong flavour.

I'd also have some canapes as well.

witchwithallthetrimmings · 20/05/2010 10:56

There was a lovely sounding recipe of jamie olivers where he drained loads of tomatoes through a muslin into a bowl and chilled it. He then added beetroot for colour and flavoured it with horse-radish and vodka. Can't find a link to the recipie though so this is all my memory

overmydeadbody · 20/05/2010 18:09

Ok, to explain fully, it's for an outdoor wedding garden party, and there are plenty of other canapes as well, it won't be a starter as such, just food laid on for the guests after the marriage and before lunch is served.

I am not toying qwith the idea of smoothie being served in shot glasses instead, so something fruity and sweet (there is a lot of cheese involved in the canapes) rather than another savoury dish.

Does that sound ok?

That Jamie Oliver thing is fantastic. Someone made it for me once.

I wouldn't be over keen on smoothies or soup, personally. Agree that it ought to be something v intensely flavoured. Smoothies better than soup, though.

Coderooo · 20/05/2010 18:20

ergghh ergggh

MrsJohnDeere · 20/05/2010 18:24

Big nay from me. I loathe cold soup.

Coderooo · 20/05/2010 18:25
