Hi, my health visitor suggested I could give weetabix snacks for my 9 months old baby. Not sure which one. Any suggestion

Weetabix was mentioned to me instead of paying for a baby ceral, not sure about the snacks. Just watch out for the salt content.

Pozzled · 19/05/2010 08:42

Yeah, weetabix is fine. If you're concerned about the salt content, the organic version has less salt- but it doesn't have the added vitamins etc.

Another good one is Ready Brek.

Is it good for 9 months old? how do u prepare?

I didn't know weetabix did snacks, as lovebeing says as long as the salt content is ok they should be fine.

DD pretty much always has weetabix for breakfast and has done since about 8 months. It's great for helping them feed themselves as stays on the spoon and cheaper than all the gimmicky porridges.

Just put milk on it! Cows milk, formula or breast milk is fine.

LoveBeingAHungParliament · 19/05/2010 08:48

readybrek is good too. With both of them you can add fruit to them. At first you can add the fruit pouches, then grates apples/pear etc then just chop. Its good cause you can get their first lot of fruit in there plus can make it a bit different. I ahve been careful not to do this e ery day so that she can still eat it on its own.

maybebaby23 · 19/05/2010 11:05

can babies who are just starting have weetabix then? My DD has had porridge and rusk, would like to try her on something different!

withorwithoutyou · 19/05/2010 11:18

I think as long as they're over 6 months it's ok. We gave DD everything but didn't start weaning til 6 months, I think if you start younger than that there are things to avoid (wheat being one of them).

withorwithoutyou · 19/05/2010 11:19

(gave her everything except things like honey and nuts obviously)

A friend's DS used to go absolutely wild for Weetabix mixed with spinach when he was a baby. I can't see the appeal myself, but maybe you have to be under one to appreciate it...

IMoveTheStars · 19/05/2010 11:23

Oatibix is a bit smoother than weetabix, and the nappies are a lot less unpleasant. Ready brek is very good for little ones though, no added salt at all.

Poledra · 19/05/2010 11:26

Be aware, though, that Weetabix sets like concrete, therefore clean it off the floor as soon as possible after breakfast.

3 children and I always ended up chipping it off the floor tiles with a knife...........

BornToFolk · 19/05/2010 11:27

I hope she didn't mean these Oaty bars

They look quite good for an older child but not really suitable for a baby.

You need to be a bit careful with Weetabix as it's high in fibre and can result in some nasty nappies!

I prefer Readybrek myself (well, actually I hate it but I mean for DS!) I just heat a bowl of milk in the microwave, mix in the Readybrek and add some fruit.

withorwithoutyou · 19/05/2010 11:29

Poledra, that's why we have a dog!

Poledra · 19/05/2010 11:31

withor, I really want a dog for that reason - when my SIL comes to stay with her two dogs, I don't have to sweep under DD3's high chair at all. I swear they catch the food before it hits the ground!

So, if anyone can recommend me a dog that will be happy to be at home alone 8am-5.30pm 4 days a week, I'm there.................

withorwithoutyou · 19/05/2010 11:32

Food doesn't hit the ground in our house either. Sometimes I think I'd be better off feeding it directly to the dog, cut out the middle man

IMoveTheStars · 19/05/2010 11:34

ah yes, I'm sure weetabix and ready brek could be used as a building material

DP never remembers to wash the bowls or wipe the highchair straight away, and always ends up scraping off concrete.

ImSoNotTelling · 19/05/2010 11:41

I give mine weetabix for breakfast with cows milk once they're over 6 months. If you warm the milk/give it a few secs in the microwave, you can stir it up into a very satisfying slop.

I had a look at all the labels when I had DD1 (pfb) and weetabix was aboutone of the best in terms of lower salt/sugar but being fortified.

It's also quite good for when they start using a spoon for themselves, as it's like glue, so doesn't fall off the spoon, however much they tip it upsidedown on the way to the mouth
