Hi all,

hope this thread is in the right place.. always get confused by these topics!!

I'm attempting tonight to decorate one of those Barbie doll type cakes for my daughter's 5th birthday... Baked the cakes yesterday, fingers crossed they turned out edible! They're in the freezer now - should I ice them straight away after taking out of freezer or let the cakes defrost a bit first?!

Second question, I've got lots of pink ready to roll icing - should I stick this to the skirt cake with just apricot glaze or with just buttercream, or what?! I think the bodice bit I should just use apricot glaze on the plastic body, is that right?! And di I just knead the icing a bit to make it more pliable before I roll it out? And roll it out on lots of plain flour?!

Would really appreciate links to any good pics for style ideas... and wish me luck! Better slow down on the wine drinking now

Thanks

Unfreeze the cakes completely. Don't ice on a frozen cake - it will make your icing all slimy.

Use buttercream to stick the fondant on it.

When I did it I cut the skirt off the barbie I'd bought to stick in the middle and used the bodice top of the dress rather than using fondant. If you don't want to do this try wrapping her top half in ribbon. YOu will find it very difficult to get the icing rolled thin enough to make the bodice look much good, unless you have some stuff called gum tracanth.

Knead the icing for a good couple of minutes before you roll it. It shouldn't crack at all when it's folded over and then it will be ready for use.

Good luck.

DO NOT USE flour to roll out your icing, use icing sugar!
