It may be fashinable, but I dont' really get this chirozo/fish combo thing.

I had it for the first time this week, in a very nice restaurant. But the sausage seemed too strong for the haddock, which too a back seat.

Where has this weird combo come from, and why is it so popular?

Yes, I had a seafood and chorizo linguine and it was horrible. I'll usually eat anything and usually enjoy it, but I didn't get it either.

Speckledeggy · 15/05/2010 21:52

Ooh no, I love it. There's a nice recipe on BBC Good Food with new potatoes.

Mind you, I love most food!

londonmackem · 15/05/2010 21:59

I love it but the balance needs to be right, which is why I have never cooked it myself!

BeenBeta · 15/05/2010 22:04

It is a Catalan dish I think. Chorizo works well with fish, eggs or any bland food.

Did asparagus, hollandaise with small pieces of toasted chorizo last week.

Worked surprisingly well.

fishie · 15/05/2010 22:08

any excuse to eat chorizo makes me happy. i wouldn't bother with the fish and def not haddock.

OtterInaSkoda · 18/05/2010 16:10

Chorizo is pretty standard in paella, isn't it? But then I guess the flavours in that (shellfish, chicken) are stronger than in white fish so it works better. Or something

Ewe · 18/05/2010 16:19

Chorizo and scallops are delicious!

chopstheduck · 18/05/2010 16:27

It is lovley though - especially with monkfish or scallops. I think it's like londonmackem says, the balance has to be right. Very little chorizo to the fish.

I made a haddock and chorizo hotpot last week and it was lovely, but two massive fillets of haddock (to feed 6) and only about 150g of chroizo.

Tidey · 18/05/2010 16:31

I've not tried it, but then I'm not that keen on fish to begin with. The thing I don't understand is this current craze about pea puree and strawberry foam.

Alouiseg · 18/05/2010 16:31

Pork and fish have always had a natural "marriage".

Fish fried in bacon fat is fantastic.

I seem to remember that Rick Stein makes a few references to it.

EdgarAllenPoll · 18/05/2010 16:34

i love paella (though i believe true paella is made with rabbit and chicken, though that doesn't sound that great a combo to me)
yummy chorizo. yummy seafood and fish. I think the fatty saltyness of the chorizo actually complements the fish nicely...

ChocolatePants · 18/05/2010 16:36

Am watching this thread for inspiration as I have just bought some chorizo....good ideas so far!

OtterInaSkoda · 18/05/2010 16:39

Smallwhitecat, I'm that your DH cooks.

Tidey...funny you should say that about "strawberry foam" as I had it for desert, mixed in with Eaton Mess. Not sure what that was about.

It's always been very popular in Portuguse cooking - a classic is steamed clams and choritzo in a cataplana (a large shellfish steamer) with lots of coriander and garlic - yummy! I prefer choritzo with shellfish rather than fish, I must say. If fish, I think it helps to have a starchy base to soak it all up, like paella.

ReshapeWhileDamp · 20/05/2010 22:56

Gah! I mean, Portuguese cooking.
