My fav picnic item is this...

Make some bread dough as normal. After it has risen, roll it out to a rough rectangle shape. Spread sun dried tomato paste over the middle, then layer ham, mozzarella cheese and boiled eggs. Throw in some basil and give it all a sprinkle of salt & pepper. Then bring one side of dough over, and then bring the other side over and seal it together (sort of like a big pasty!).

Let it sit for a short while then bake it as normal.

Honest to god it is gorgeous.

I usually slice it and then wrap it in foil to keep it slightly warm. The you can give it out in slices. MMmmmmmm

I love picnics. My kids just want to eat and run (or play) though, so they're happy with a cob and some crisps. I'd have a frittata, personally.

Pain bagnat or some other kind of stuffed loaf is nice & better done in advance

Personally it'd be marmite & tomato sarnies for me, especially when they've been left to fester a bit in the boot of the car

Don't make your life overly complicated.

Just make some sandwiches, with everyone's favourite fillings, and whatever bread you usually use, and some crisps, biscuits and drink and fruit.

I'm making wraps filled with cream cheese, red peppers, olives, tomatoes and left over roast chicken (the cream cheese just sticks it all together). Then I am taking the fig rolls and crsips and bananas that are in the cupboard.

Jet I grew up in a very hot part of the world and when we went for dessert trecks my mum would make tomato and cheese baguettes and by the time we got round to eating them they would be all warm and soggy and the cheese would be soft and it was heavenly. I have still not got used to cold sandwiches served in this country!
