If so, how commonly available is it? Am trying to think of a nice recipe to share with a friend of mine.

It is not hugely available (but I'm in the rural South West) except in jars/tins. I have occasionally found it in specialiesd fruit and veg shops but not readily in supermarkets.

These days, I'm pretty sure you can get white asparagus....If you've got any good farmers markets nearby that would be your best bet as I don't think it lasts for very long after it's picked (only a few days), which is possibly why it isn't in loads of supermarkets

You could try white asparagus spears with some shrimps scattered over...or crispy lardons.......or with a nice mustard vinaigrette and Serrano ham.

Mmmmmmm

Haven't seen it in a supermarket but Borough Martket had some the other day.

Our local asparagus farm (in Norfolk) sells it at their farm shop and produces it for (posh) restaurants. Same price as normal greenstuff.

So, if you find a local producer, you may be able to get your hands on some straight from the farm.

i'm not any help to find it in the UK but i'm in germany where its a national meal at this time of year. They just eat it with potatoes and hollondaise sauce - nothing else! its one of my fave meals tho!

hope you manage to get some!

minipie · 13/05/2010 16:00

think you can get it tinned if nothing else...

personally I prefer the green stuff anyway...

prettybird · 13/05/2010 16:08

The only difference is that it has been blanched by being earthed up/covered while grwoing.

I have jsut planted some asparagus in my garden: 3 different varieties, one of which is a thicker one which in Europe would be blanched and picked white, but which here we would probably just let grow naturally and pick green.

Most good greengrocers will have continentally grown asparagus which is white.

girlsyearapart · 14/05/2010 19:30

our local german shop sell it but we live in surrey so not near norwich I'm afraid.

oxocube · 14/05/2010 19:35

Dead common here in Holland - in all the supermarkets and markets. Its the green which I prefer and which is less common/expensive here!

MrsJohnDeere · 14/05/2010 19:45

I've seen it at Farmers' Markets in St Albans and Harpenden. Green is much nicer imho.

You've brought back lots of memories of living in Germany though and spargel season.

Psammead · 15/05/2010 09:42

Thanks for the replies everyone

Farmers' market in St. Albans is useful as friend lives very close.

Thanks!
