Is butter better than spreads?

Just getting up to speed on butter v low fat spreads. We've always bought the latter (usually Flora extra-light) on the basis that it's healthier and fortified with Omega 3 and 6 but now wondering if butter is a better option on the basis that it contains a better type of fat. DS only has a thin scrapping on toast but still. What's the issue with low fat spreads?

They taste like shit! I love butter me.

CheerfulYank · 04/05/2010 01:47

I don't really trust anything that isn't "real" food, so I go with butter.

LovelyDear · 04/05/2010 01:50

real butter is best for you

LovelyDear · 04/05/2010 01:53

although the British heart foundation disagree with me....

Butter is better for your health marg is better for your lovehandles.

I would always have butter over any chemically-altered oil. In limited quantities of course but still.

FLora = con-artists, imo.

We have olive spread on toast
Butter in baking and jacket pots

I always used olive oil spread till I watched a programme recently where some chap got all the ingedients and tried to make his own. I was nearly sick and now go along with CheerfulYank on the 'real food only' stance.

GetOrfMoiLand · 04/05/2010 12:03

Rockbird I think I watched the same programme as you.

He made butter as well - iirc he just shook milk about tremendously and voila, butter.

The list of ingredients for margarine was long and vile.

I would never eat marg, after a childhood of Stork as a butter substitute. It tastes disgusting. Just use butter, it is far nicer and at least is ,ade out of things you have actually heard of and can pronounce.

meltedmarsbars · 04/05/2010 12:03

Real butter, as all of the above.

Just don't eat the whole packet at once!

And butter/lard mix for pastry.

TheCrackFox · 04/05/2010 12:08

Real butter just taste so nice.

If the ingredients of food look like a GCSE chemistry paper then it is best avoided.

wigglybeezer · 04/05/2010 12:15

There's Omega 3 in butter too and too much Omega 6 is bad for you.

Rockbird · 04/05/2010 12:20

That was the one GOML. Yes, milk in a jar and shake till your arms drop off vs 470 chemicals and a bunsen burner
