it turned out lovely.

Squeezed all the butter milk out, washed it and then moulded it and sprinkled salt crystals on top and it is really nice. I am so impressed with myself.

Thats all really.

RustyBucket · 03/05/2010 16:31

It is great fun isn't it.

deaddei · 03/05/2010 16:32

I feel I have entered a parallel universe
Do you live on farms?

BoysAreLikeDogs · 03/05/2010 16:33

no, I do live in the cuntry (TM Beety) though

Katymac · 03/05/2010 16:34

My mum did this with my brother & I years ago

I can't remember how now - how did you do it?

shimmerygoldglitter · 03/05/2010 16:34

lol I live in inner city London.

Ds saw it being made on Big Cook, Little Cook today and I told him we could make it if he wanted he didn't believe I could so I showed him, he is having it on french bread as we speak.

Sounds lovely.
Butter is my downfall- on Jersey potatoes.
Or anything really.

geraldinetheluckygoat · 03/05/2010 16:36

it does sound incredibly poncetastic (lol@boys -heheh) but nice, bet it tastes great! Did you use milk from your own cow?

BoysAreLikeDogs · 03/05/2010 16:36

here's a how-to

shimmerygoldglitter · 03/05/2010 16:36

Big tub of cream, electric whisk.

Whisked it for ages till it separated. Drained off butter milk, washed it in cold water, put in mould and sprinkled salt crystals on top, then put in fridge. I really do think I will make it all the time now, tastes so much better and no more expensive.

Did it take long? We had a go last year but got fed up of shaking it for flippin' hours and getting nowhere. How do you know if you've got actual butter or just whipped cream?

BoysAreLikeDogs · 03/05/2010 16:40

the butter suddenly goes into a lump

tip orf the buttermilk ( great for making scones om nom nom)

( I used a clean mayonnaise jar. a large one. for the shaking. took perhaps 45 mins)

shimmerygoldglitter · 03/05/2010 16:41

It took about twenty minutes but I did it straight from the fridge, apparently much less if the cream is at room temperature.

You whip and whip the cream and then all of a sudden a thin white liquid comes out and the cream has gone pale yellow, so I went on a bit longer just to be sure but no more liquid came out so then put the granules of butter into a sieve and rinsed with cold water and it then sort of formed a ball of butter by itself.

Double or single - we will do this with the children this week

Can you use sour cream?

Compost · 03/05/2010 16:43

ooh this sounds delicious, I can almost taste the lovely butter!

I remember doing it eons ago at school and spending hours shaking those little glass milk bottles when they gave you the free milk.

Might just have to give it a go.

shimmerygoldglitter · 03/05/2010 16:43

Double or whipping, single too thin.

Not sure about sour cream.

TulipsInTheSunshine · 03/05/2010 16:46

my mother used to accidentally alot... she likes quite firmly whipped cream and used a food processor, every now and again she'd go too far and we've have strawberries and butter

BoysAreLikeDogs · 03/05/2010 16:47

hah hah strawbewrries and butter, v funny

double cream best, not sour cream

WhiteNoise · 03/05/2010 16:52

strawberries and butter?!

Katymac · 03/05/2010 16:55

DD is making some now

She is taking homemade bread with homemade butter & homemade jam for packed lunch tomorrow - she has decided

Hope it works she so needs success atm

MilkNoSugarPlease · 03/05/2010 16:56

Oh this could be fab for butter obsessed charges!

Can you use a big kitchenaid processor?

BoysAreLikeDogs · 03/05/2010 16:57

I am sure that OP used an electric whisk

I use a big lidded glass jar

experiment, set yourself free from the thought of failure

tra la laaa

etc etc

shimmerygoldglitter · 03/05/2010 16:57

Yes can use electric whisk or food processor.

It will work Katymac. Make sure you rinse all the butter milk out afterwards as will turn sour and butter will not last so long. It is quite soft initially but firms up in fridge obviously.

MilkNoSugarPlease · 03/05/2010 16:59

Whisk may be better!

I have visions of charges being happy to do this for 5 minutes then ill be left baby in one arm and jar of butter in the other shaking until my arm falls off!

i feel very river cottagy about it

Katymac · 03/05/2010 16:59

I may get the kenwood out if DD runs out of steam (dh is helping & it's in a baby's bottle - all I could find with a lid)

It's 'old' cream which Hugh says is good.....he just doesn't say how old
