Do you use a breadmaker, or your own fair hands???

Am thinking about joining the club

TSAP
We had to save a tenner a month for ours. BUT, it was cheapest on Amazon.co.uk. About £25 cheaper than in Argos for the same model! We'd be warned off cheaper models by a friend whose a long-time breadmaker owner, so we sprung for the Panasonic SD253.

It was worth the wait!

We keep a small supply of Carr's mixes - you can get them at Lakeland for a little under £1 a package - for nights when we've got too much on and we need bread for the next day, but mostly use recipes.

Deffo worth saving for if you're short on time!

We have a Breville panini maker than we use for toast b/c the breadmaker bread doesn't fit in our normal toaster.

Bought breadmaker for £49 in Sainsburys, lovely bread and fab machine- great value too!

Failing the silly bargains, check on the GHI (good housekeeping institute) mag and site for recommendations

The lack of space is more an issue, I currently have out on my kitchen surfaces a toaster, kettle, tea/coffee/sugar pots, coffee filter machine, juicer, steamer and microwave. All of which I use every day also have mixer, hand blender, , food processor, toastie machine and slow cooker in my utilty room so I can bring them out when needed. I am also trying to pinch my Mum's much underused smoothie maker. My kitchen cannot take anoter gadget!

Katiemac, Miaou put her recipe on the other bread thread at the moment

Thanks I'll have a look

Another vote for the Panasonic machine - it's fabulous. Great for gluten free too.

sarjon · 31/07/2005 21:11

oops, sorry, when i said 'fresh' yeast I just meant that the dried stuff i was using was a fresh packet sorry, should have made myself more clear.

As Miaou said, the packets are better than a tub.

My bread maker is a fairly cheapo morphy richards one, I think its more to do with the ingredients - whenever I use an all in one packet it never quite works properly, if I add all the ingredients myself it tastes much better.

Gillian76 · 31/07/2005 23:47

Oh a*se! I've just burnt it!

Actually it's just one corner of the loaf... We'll see what it tastes like in the morning

HAven't read the other replies but a lot depends on the actual breadmaker - they're definitely one of those machines that "you get what you pay for"

I was VERY VERY VERY lucky and was bought the panasonic 2yrs ago as joint birthday present from my parents and DH - it turns out fantastic bread (everytime) - so good that my mum (who used to bake ALL our own bread - handmade of course, as well as biscuits, pies, scones, pastries, chocolate eclairs etc etc) went out and bought one for herself!

A friend of mine bought one of the cheaper brands (think it was a morphy richards?) and was very disappointed with it, splashed out on a more expensive one and the bread improved 100 fold.

I use the seperate ingreidents in mine - none of the 'packs'.

QueenOfQuotes · 31/07/2005 23:58

OK just read the other replies and it would seem I'm not the only one completely in love with a Panasonic

BTW - my only 'downfall' with using it is when I've tried to make rolls etc with it, so make dough in the bread maker, let it rise again and then bake..........it always seems to come out really hard on top [frown]

I was hand baking! We'll see what the results are and I may save up for a breadmaker if disasterous!

How much is the panasonic breadmaker?

TwinSetAndPearls · 01/08/2005 00:19

There are two models available SD252 and SD253 - which is better? Or does it not matter?

QueenOfQuotes · 01/08/2005 00:21

Think they're both pretty much the same (and blimey the prices have gone down since I got mine ) - I've got the SD252 - it was about £120 when I got mine 2 1/2yrs ago!

TwinSetAndPearls · 01/08/2005 00:31

I have seen them from £60 to £90.

Still a lot of money at the moment, it might make me very fat as well - eating all tht butter coated fresh bread.

assumedname · 01/08/2005 00:32

The SD253 has an automatic nut dispenser.
You have to remember to put nuts/seeds in yourself at the right time with the SD252.

TwinSetAndPearls · 01/08/2005 00:45

thanks assumed name, i am tempted!

"Not keen on breadmaker bread TBH."

I'm not keen on Morphy Richards Breadmaker bread, and there's some handmade breads I've tasted which were pretty dire.

The 'quality' of breads that come from different bread makers (and the recipe used too) vary so greatly I do think it's very hard to say catergorically that you're 'not keen' on it TBH.

I with you lived closer to me - I'd put a bet on you'd love at least one of my 5 regular loaves I make in my Panasonic (oh and my pizza bases)

assumedname · 01/08/2005 01:01

I have a Panasonic and the bread is very good.
Got that one as it was the only one I'd read about that makes decent wholemeal bread.

QueenOfQuotes · 01/08/2005 01:03

my DS's favourite (at the moment LOL) is a "light" wholemeal, using a small quantity of white and the rest wholemeal - the rapid white loaf is pretty good too.

I use this website and a HUGE breadmaking book for my recipes.

QueenOfQuotes · 01/08/2005 01:05

I find the 'mess' made when (trying) making breadrolls is bad enough without the added mess of starting the whole thing from scratch

PS - how do I stop my lovely dough from the breadmaker turing into rocks in the oven when I make rollls?
