Is black treacle the same as molasses?

And how do I make my 'rich chilli sauce' taste less vinegary?

It's bit different but you they are pretty much used the same in cooking.
What's in your rich chilli sauce?

Some really authentic chili recipes involve a little unsweetened chocolate or plain cocoa (not drinking choc) -- about a teaspoonful goes a long way, and it can drown out most other flavours. How did it get vinegary? I would avoid sweetening the chili with treacle or molasses.

it's the jamie oliver mountain meatballs with chilli sauce. I've left the chilli out as yet because of the toddlers. The ingredients are:

worcester sauce
tom ketchup
cider vinegar
molasses/sugar
hot coffee
smoked paprika
garlic
onion
quartered plum tomatoes

it just tastes like sweet vinegar - at the mo - ok in v small quantities but it's meant to be a sauce!

do you think choc will do it?

and dijon mustard!

I have rescued the odd chili myself with a sprinkle of cocoa. Put in a small bit first, then taste, then add more if you can still taste the vinegar. Or you could boil it down a bit and then add more tomatoes, but pureed instead of just quartered. Ground cumin is nice in chili too, and it's not hot like chili powder or chilis themselves.

Oh I can't bear cocoa in chilli - it tastes kind of burnt to me.

I'd try the treacle instead.
