I am off to do a sainsbury's order shortly and would like to try and cut down on the amount of biscuits and sweet things coming into the house.
I need snack ideas for the children to eat after school and for me to have during the day.
I do bake but of course that is mostly sweet stuff too.
I would have a problem with my will power if I had to chop or otherwise prepare anything rather than opening a packet.

what about fruit?

grapes / satsumas / pears etc?
dried fruit, eg apricots / raisens

cherry tomatoes / carrot / pepper sticks dipped in a ini tub of cream cheese or humouse?

things like peanut butter (maybe with banana as well) on toast

Ivykaty44 · 29/04/2010 13:44

dd takes carrot and cucumber stick and olives 9but only black and I get a tin in sainsbury) to school with humous

she also only likes fruit if it is prepared, whole fruit is not her thing

So I always get starwberrys chopped, melon and I have a melone baller, i also do fruit in jelly and home made custard and bananas

Fruit is already on the menu extensively. They take fruit to school for lunch and are given it at break time by the school. They eat fruit at home freely.
Carrot and pepper sticks need preparing. When it comes to sitting down with a cup of tea I now what will win in the carrot stick versus biscuit competition.

how about going for healthier alternatives?

banana bread? / Carrot cake / or a toasted bagel with a little butter?

Ivykaty44 · 29/04/2010 15:33

a peice of toast with honey is a quick alternative and if the bread is homemade very little sugar, if you can make homemade fruit loaf all the better, with a little butter and a cup of tea it goes well

Ah fruit loaf sounds more like it. That would do nicely for me. DDs might even go for it. I remember now that there is a recipe on here somewhere for homemade malt loaf which would be fab.

Breadsticks (Sainsbury's does mini ones in a tub) with mashed hummous or a yoghurt dip?
Mini pittas with soft cheese and peppers?
DD loves an oatcake and a piece of cheese.

Fruit is excellent and really easy. I try to make a batch of fruit muffins on a SAunday, put them in a tin and they last the week (children can bear a stale muffin, 'cos it's still a muffin!). I use very little sugar in them and often frozen fruits (blueberries, raspberries) or banana- takes half an hour all in.

Good luck, you'll find you save a fortune on snack foods as they are so expensive, for what they are.

yoghurts?
melba toasts and cream cheese?
do a big batch of veg soup and freeze into portions (I just did a WW one with butternut squash and red peppers, no fat) just have to bung in microwave for a few mins
