Do you really have to stick to this? Says this on virtually everything, including things like big blocks of cheese which I just can't use up that quickly.

I usually go for once opened, use common sense. Eg cheese will last longer than 3 days in the fridge, so long as its not left unwrapped!

Valpollicella · 27/04/2010 22:26

Are you cleaning your fridge out this evening Em? What with your other thread about mince

emkana · 27/04/2010 22:28

Yes food on my mind tonight, probably because I'm trying not to eat!

I've used tomato passata that's been open 3 weeks and I'm still alive. It's all about common sense. With something like cheese it's just nonsense. They're covering their backs and trying to make us buy food we don't need.

Valpollicella · 27/04/2010 22:37

cheese I didn't even realise it had a date on it...especially when you can buy 3 yr vintage cheddar - that's not creeping in mould

Passata I would prob leave a week, just as I find it has a bit of a funny taste if left longer, but it's still edible.

diedandgonetodevon · 27/04/2010 22:43

I very rarely stick to it (or in fact even read it). If it smells and tastes ok, then we eat it. It's just common sense really.

The only use-by dates I stick to rigidly is on chicken as I have an odd distrust of chicken.

I think it's just a ploy by the supermarkets to make you buy more.

BeenBeta · 27/04/2010 22:44

I think this 'Eat withn 3 days' thing is purely there to provide legal cover if a consumer gets food poisoning. As long as food is opened, not contaminated, covered immediately and put back in a fridge it should last much more than 3 days.

GetOrfMoiLand · 27/04/2010 22:45

No, I just check it smells Ok and carry on.

SixtyFootDoll · 27/04/2010 22:50

i go by rule of sniff myself

Pomi · 28/04/2010 21:23

Me too, always finish the food. the yogurt pot some times it says use within two day. i use it for more than a week.

Elenio · 28/04/2010 21:35

another follower of the rule of sniff

RubyBuckleberry · 28/04/2010 21:42

definitey sniff it.

cheese fine unless actually mouldy i would say

chicken bit dodgy so more strict, probably no real need though

yoghurt also eat past the date unless mouldy

have just eaten one day out of date mince

just make sure its cooked - that programme where he ate stuff 1,2,3 - 11,12,13,14 days out of date they tested the food and there was more bacteria but they died during cooking anyway. the science man said prob. wouldn't recommend it for the very vulnerable but for most, it would be fine
