pine nuts and other nuts withdrawn - why?

Was trying to find pine nuts in a supermarket I don't usually use (so had to ask where they were). En route to the isle, the guy said "not sure whether we'll have any, lots of nuts have been withdrawn". but didn't know why. Anyone else heard of this? Way too soon for supplies of nuts to be affected by recent flight issues.

I think they have done some tests on nuts that are from India and have found higher traces of a chemical in them? I'll have a hunt for the info for you.

www.freshplaza.com/news_detail.asp?id=57253 I can't find any recent info about the UK supplies though.

thanks for going to the trouble belle. I did have a quick intranet search before I posted but couldn't find anything recent. Ah well, just had to do without them!

ooh. I was just about to make pesto but perhaps I won't bother. This kind of thing makes me want to lurch back to organic, which would have a disastrous effect on my shoe habit family budget.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 24/04/2010 18:14

oh no!! need nuts for our museli!! oh well will have to use choc chips instead.

BelleDeChocolateFluffyBunny · 24/04/2010 18:59

Chocolate chips are better then nuts!

Habbibu · 24/04/2010 19:01

Not sure organic production would offer any protection against salmonella, onebat.

MerlinsBeard · 24/04/2010 19:10

nothing on food standards agency website

lilolilmanchester · 24/04/2010 21:57

there are lots of nuts still on the shelves, almonds, walnuts, everything else but pinenuts - not even organic ones!

I bought some in Tesco last week,do you think they will be okay to eat? DS munches them like sweets.

LauraIngallsWilder · 24/04/2010 23:38

Someone on here (cant remember who) a few weeks ago, after having eaten some pine nuts suffered a terrible taste in her mouth for days afterwards - possibly lots of people suffered same problem, which could explain it?

BelleDeChocolateFluffyBunny · 24/04/2010 23:56

Yes, sainsburys has a comments page, alot of comments about an aftertaste from them.

lilolilmanchester · 25/04/2010 15:08

that's interesting, probably as well I couldn't get any !

Oh sorry I missed the salmonella bit. Phew.

taffetacat · 25/04/2010 16:10

The only thing I know about pine nuts is that they go rancid very quickly once opened.
