tea party

I am having a tea party this Sunday (my first one, I am sooooooo excited!). I am making some little ham/pickle sandwiches and cream cheese/salmon (without the crust), also baking some scones. I was thinking of making some mini cream profiteroles, would that be OK? Any other suggestions for my tea party, please?

Can I come?

How about a chocolate cake? Or the famous lemon drizzle cake from mumsnet recipes?

I would think about a vegetarian sandwich option too if I were you.

It would be lovely to have all the nice MNers!!!

Chocolate cake.... I think you are right about the veggie option. Maybe cucumber sandwiches (that sounds very British, doesn't it?)

Jam tarts? Very easy.

slim22 · 22/04/2010 17:34

yes a pretty cake is the rigueur!

slim22 · 22/04/2010 17:35

"de" rigueur even

plisplas · 22/04/2010 18:16

How do you make jam tarts?

I think they're fairly easy - make pastry, press into tin, fill with jam, bake. Here's a recipe

Re cucumber sandwiches, the key with these is to peel and deseed the cucumber, so that all you are biting into is the soft flesh, and slice it very thinly: otherwise the sandwiches go soggy from the watery seeds, and the skin and thick slices are tougher to chew. Also, use salted butter.

Cupcakes, decorated prettily would be lovely and are so easy to make. Lemon drizzle cake is delicious and also very easy. Get a pretty tablecloth, and see if you can get some pretty, vintage style crockery, teapots, cups and saucers etc [charity shops, or borrowing]. Put jam and clotted cream for scones in pretty pots etc.

This might be my personal preference, but i would think a cheese and pickle sandwich a bit too 'hearty' for a tea party? Anyone with me? Salmon, cream cheese, cucumber all ideal though - crusts off, in little triangles or fingers.

Enjoy, it sounds lovely!

Something with fresh strawberries - Maybe mini cupcake with butter icing and a strawberry on top. Or mini strawberry shortcakes.

I think summer tea parties need strawberries

Enjoy!

plisplas · 23/04/2010 13:17

Would strawberry gateau be too continental?

I dont think it matter really

meltedmarsbars · 23/04/2010 13:30

You cannot have cupcakes!!!!

This is an English teaparty, yes?

So you have fairy cakes!

meltedmarsbars · 23/04/2010 13:31

For the truly English teaparty you need a Mad Hatter. And a Dormouse that fits in a teapot.

And Chocloate Eclairs, scones with clotted cream and jam, and Earl Grey.

stleger · 23/04/2010 13:39

You could make butterfly buns which are a more British cupcake really. As long as you don't even think of them as cupcakes you would be fine.

taffetacat · 23/04/2010 14:36

Cucumber sandwiches as droolingly described above
Weeny little finger rolls with egg and cress or coronation chicken
Scones
A large cake with filling eg Victoria Sponge, Coffee and Walnut on a breathtakingly pretty comport
Tea
Elderflower cordial ( very nice with Prosecco....)

Lots of bunting!

plisplas · 24/04/2010 19:37

Not long to go now. I think I have everything ready. I hope the weather is nice!!!!
