How many people?

Iklboo · 20/04/2010 13:59

Do they eat potatoes, pasta, cous cous?

thehillsarealive · 20/04/2010 13:59

what sort of food do they eat?

how about lasagne, chilli, shepherds pie, fish & salad, lots and lots of pasta dishes with tomatoe style sauces?

noodles, veg, (frozen) and some chicken with sauce of some sort.

You can roast a chicken for one meal, use leftover meat for another then use the carcass to make stock for a chicken casserole/stew

scurryfunge · 20/04/2010 14:01

Omelettes, tortillas are cheap.Roast a big chicken at the beginning of the week and you'll get curries, risottos, soup, etc for a few days

scurryfunge · 20/04/2010 14:02

Chickpeas are cheap. Either buy them dry and cook them or buy some cans. Make felafel out of them.

Pizzas - easy to make and saucte cheap. Get the 2-for-1 offers in the supermarkets (they usually have things like great big blocks of cheese). Buy a big pack of spuds, rice, pasta, tins of tomatoes, packs of mince, whole chickens (roast then use leftovers for sandwiches, pies and soup), beef/lamb (roast, then tatie pot with the leftovers)carrots, onions... the basics and plan some nice meals around what you have. If you like fish, see what is on special offer - M&S did have 4 trout fillets for £5 and they are really nice. Get the cod fillets and make fish fingers - these are great - much bigger than the shop bought ones and tastier. If you are feeling adventurous, use soya chinks to make a curry - I know it sounds yeugh but it is nice, really!

Whatever you make, make a little extra and freeze it - so that you have some bits and pieces left in the freezer at the end of the week.

Look at what you've already got in cupboards and freezer and make a list - post it on here if you want; you'll have more than £60 worth of food altogether that way, and if you count it in to your planning, it'll go further.

PandaEis · 20/04/2010 15:07

i agree, make a list of what you have in your cupboards and then get onto mysupermarket.com and do a shop for what is needed to make meals out of what you have. i do this and it saves us a fortune!! my budget is roughly £40 a week but things have been tight so i try to stick to own branded items and get what i need for about £30-ish there is only me, DH and DD (4yo) in our house too

put what you have in on here and we will help you meal plan for the week to come if you want

rosiejoy · 20/04/2010 15:47

Porridge for breakfast, and make it with mostly water and just a dash of milk. Will save you LOADS compared to cereals, toast etc

Doodleydoo · 20/04/2010 15:50

Yup give us an idea of what is in your cupboard and will give you some ideas.

BitterAndTwistedChoreDodger · 20/04/2010 15:53

Second what everyone else has said. Plus bulk out mince with porridge oats - makes it go further.

Jacket potatoes are cheap and filling.

If you can go to a market at closing time you can pick up cheap fruit and veg.

curvey · 22/04/2010 21:50

many thanks Ive done a shop today - in cupboard had brown rice, tageatelli, pasta, chick peas, porridge, marinades, cook in curry sauce, canelini beans, cup a soups so just added to to make meals for week.

Have bought some salmon to marinate, mince for bol and chilli, joint of pork roast plus left over for a stir fry, chicken - curry then use carcis for soup and left overs for sarnies, some fruit/veg.

Also nipped to M&S and got 3 meals for £6
