Just wondered if it is possible to buy anywhere?

I usually make my own but would like to try a shop bought one to compare.

I bought some Dr Oetker (I think) stuff at Christmas for the dc to cover their Yule logs with - was foul and nobody ate it.

You can buy Do Oetker stuff in most supermarkets, BUT before you buy it Please look at the ingredients and remember how you make it at home... Tis truly awful (even though it tastes like heaven)

here, was not good.

betty crocker does one, ive seen it lots in the baking isles, i have a vanilla and chocolate fudge one for emergencies, but im pretty sure they've gone out of date.

Its so easy to make it yourself, and a lot nicer taste aswell

phoenixflower · 19/04/2010 20:48

Thanks everyone. Might try one of the Dr Oetker but by the sounds of it I should probably stick to home made. Would it be awful if I went and made some now to eat?

No it's a great idea. I'll have a bowl too please.

I make double of mine and keep it in the fridge. (This is not v. often - sounds like I'm icing cakes on a daily basis or something )
Does it freeze? It must, surely? (Computer says yes, if it's butter and sugar no eggs or anything fancy.)

EssieAmma · 22/04/2010 13:04

Dr Oetker - £2.15?! No way!

fishie · 22/04/2010 13:07

yes i'm sure you can freeze it, you can with a fully decorated cake. i am making some tomorrow if that helps phoenixflower, but my recipe is at home.

shop bought would be disgusting, it is all on shelves not refrigerated so must have v peculiar ingredients.

fillybuster · 22/04/2010 13:08

I've bought both the Dr Oetker and Betty Crocker ones and they are both utterly vile (yes yes, I know, 'why buy?'...). More importantly the ingredients are terrifying, given that it should basically read 'butter, sugar, vanilla...'

It freezes fantastically well - I now have multiple bags of different colours in the freezer to whip out at short notice.

EssieAmma · 22/04/2010 13:09

OMG fillybuster, I bow to your organisation!

fillybuster · 22/04/2010 13:27

Organisation??? One of the reasons I have multiple bags of icing in the freezer is because I have 3 freezers, all so full of stuff that I never remember what's actually in there. So I make a new batch of icing (for example), stick the leftovers in a nicely labelled bag in the freezer, then spot the 6 other, similarly coloured packets, from the last 6 sessions...

Do not be impressed!!!

EssieAmma · 22/04/2010 14:01

Can I be impressed at the 3 freezers instead, then?

ByThePowerOfGreyskull · 23/04/2010 09:38

Filly - you have inspired me!!

my problem when I make my cakes is that I get everything ready then forget I need buttercream - I am now determined to have a few bags in the freezer for when I forget for speed
