Anyone make their own pasta?

My parents bought me a pasta machine Mum swears I said once that I would like one - have to say, I don't remember this, and it doesn't sound like something I would say (I do love cooking but for me the beauty of pasta is that it's super-fast and easy - it's what we have when I can't be bothered to cook!) but anyway, I have my shiny stainless steel machine now. It looks very cool in my kitchen. I feel like Nigella.

Ant tips? Is it as much of a faff as I suspect? Is freshly made pasta far superior to shop bought? Any recipe suggestions?

TIA

Well that's alright if you've got a bloody Waitrose isn't it (I dunno, move to London, immediately forget some of us live in the sticks)

I got the flour in a little deli/healthfood shop.
We haven't got Waitrose here either, but we do have Sainsburys, Tesco and Asda with bilingual signs.

heh heh i thought that'd get your goat moo!

have you got any delis locally? they normally stock italian flour. Or you can order it online from somewhere like this - only 1.99 a pack too

Actually I'm joshing - this could be the very opportunity I've been waiting for to try an Ocado shop for the first time (Waitrose is too far for me to get to without a car but they do deliver in my area).

huzzah! I love ocado

marthamoo · 27/07/2005 16:38

That's what worries me - I'm frightened I'll love it too, and feel for ever after that Tesco Online is slumming it.

Are you drinking lattes in some trendy internet cafe, btw?

I still do my regular shopping in Tesco. Waitrose is lovely for a treat though

TwinSetAndPearls · 27/07/2005 16:39

I make it now and again when I am feeling virtuous it is no better than shop bought fresh pasta of a good quality but it is quite satisfying to make if you are in one of those moods.

Ds and I have just munched our way through three packets of opal fruits in our local, decidedly seedy and latte-free internet caff (sic)

with dodgy keyboards (as you can see)

Our sainsbury's stocks italian flour in their speciality foods section, if we can get it here I am sure anyone else can.

marthamoo · 27/07/2005 16:41

Oh you're so retro - Starburst, darling, Starburst.

I'll try Sainsbos, T&P - more likely to have it than our tiny Tesco (they've called it Tesco Metro to try and hide the fact that it hardly seels anything).

Our tesco certainly used to stock Doves Farm Organic pasta flour.

katierocket · 27/07/2005 17:00

moo - once you try Ocado you'll never go back

marthamoo · 27/07/2005 17:04

That's what my dh is afraid of, KR.

indeed, but what price quality

(and they do such nice packaging)

Sainsburys do good pasta flour

Delia is talking rubbish as usual

home made pasta sheets for lasagne, ravioli and just plain tagliatelli is gorgeous and the shop bought fresh stuff is toot. Good quality dried stuff is better than the shop fresh stuff but homemade beats them all
