whats a cake book?

stealthsquiggle · 06/04/2010 13:32

There are 100's (and I own most of them). I think this one has a princess in it but I am not at home so can't go and check.

hotbot · 06/04/2010 14:08

thanks sq, will check it out.
cyb, just a recipe book with ideas on how to do themed bday cakes. i made a fab 3d dinosaur for dds 3rd birthday, so now she thinks i am amazing and can do anything... am unwilling to disprove this theory

Cake central is a really good recipes for ideas, not sure if it has recipes though.

going · 06/04/2010 14:13

hotbot · 06/04/2010 15:11

You need a big cupboard and/or a DH with a matching cookbook 'habit' - I have both, but the cupboards (3 of them ) are now so full I may be forced into some 'weeding' soon.

I like carol deacon's books, like this one here. I borrow them from the library, I'd have a look there before you buy anything.

stealthsquiggle · 06/04/2010 17:12

See, I do like some Carol Deacon cakes, but if the OP is looking for a Barbie princess style cake then the one in that book is awful, IMHO.

OP you should be able to see some cake photos on my profile - have a look - is that the sort of princess you are after?

hotbot · 06/04/2010 19:21

blardy hell squigs... perhaps a lot more basic - i thought i was doing well with a stegosaurus !!!! cpmletely out of my league - am in awe.

nigella, think it's the Domestic Goddess, has a recipe for a cake with a Barbie erupting out of a volcanic mound of sponge. You could ice / accessorize that into a Princess (sometimes I am v glad DS was a boy

questions2008 · 06/04/2010 20:03

i just bought this www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/1863965513/ref=oss_product and it looks great, even has some templates...although i haven't made any yet! there is a fairy godmother cake, with the doll in the middle. and it's cheap.

questions2008 · 06/04/2010 20:06

australian womens weekly

stealthsquiggle · 06/04/2010 22:13

Australian Womans Weekly books are good - although they do mostly use buttercream, and I find fondant a lot better for covering mistakes easier to work with.

"my" princess came from this book and is a lot easier than she looks. Be warned, though - that was for my Goddaughter, and she is now convinced that I can do anything she wants - the last one was a fairy castle complete with lit up towers

stealthsquiggle · 06/04/2010 22:15

I just looked back at my earlier post - I had guessed right on the book. It is a fairly foolproof book, actually - but take no notice of her time estimates as everything will take a lot longer than she says.

movetolancs · 06/04/2010 22:15

Another Australian Womens Weekly fan here. Have made at least three from the book and they are a piece of cake.

onebadbaby · 06/04/2010 22:19

I third the australian womens weekly book- have done 2 or three and they are dead easy- I always adapt the ides to suit what I can get in the supermarket.

questions2008 · 06/04/2010 22:25

ok minor hijack here...i don't have a mixer, is it really bad if i use a my food processor instead, or is that just not the same??

hotbot · 07/04/2010 15:54

thanks so much everyone, i think a food processor is mine but i would stand next to it while it does its job. xx

questions - food processor is fine but I did tend to add an extra 1/4 tsp of baking powder to make up for it not being so 'aerated' as it were.
