omg all i wanted to do was melt some cadbury easter eggs to make cornflake cakes and im now officially the worst chocolate melter ever! I first tried in microwave on a medium heat setting and it ended up in crunchy biscuit like bits that had to be scrapped. 2nd batch tried on the hob in pyrex dish over a pan 1/3 filled with boiling water and that struggled. I managed to scrape together 4 barely covered cornflake cakes and now im running out of easter eggs! Im going to make a cake and want cadburys choc on the top as its the tastiest and im trying to recreate a cake i used to eat as a kid! Any suggestions on how to melt the choc so i dont have another disaster, im officially hopeless!

I do the pyrex dish over simmering water version.

Make sure it's simmering rather than boiling.

Also do not use a wooden spoon to stir it, use a metal one instead.

how long did you melt it for in the microwave?

i always melt mine in the microwave, on a medium heat for about 1 min, then stir

i then heat for another 30 seconds and stir - this should be enough with stirring to melt it completely

if it isn't, just do 10 second bursts so it doesn't burn

even if it is lumpy the residual heat should melt it

You're getting it too hot. Cadbury's chocolate is particularly prone to not melting smoothly, something about its composition!

I don't even let the water under the bowl simmer for long - as soon as it starts to boil, turn off the heat and carry on stirring.

A knob of butter or a little oil stirred in can help. if this sounds horrible, remember oil is an obligatory part of chocolate- fountain-choc, as it just won't flow properly and keep on flowing without it.

Make sure the bowl doesn't touch the water and that water and steam doesn't get into the choc. Try and chop the choc into smaller pieces so it melts quickly and more evenly.

Cadbury's chocolate is odd - it's not you, don't worry!

Don't use the microwave!

great suggestions, had a feeling that it was too hot and that it should have been simmering and not boiling! Now I know what to do next time or more to the point what not to do, think i just need to be more patient as im in such a hurry i try and rush it which obviously doesnt work!

Thanx ladies! I made my cake and it was amazing, ooooooooh choc cake and a cuppa for brekkie!

I used teeny bit of water tho kept boiling not simmering, broke the choc into really small bits and kept stirring to help it to melt itself. I kept lifting dish off to stir and to give it short breaks from the heat. It worked a treat!

I am no longer afraid of melting chocolate thanx to all your help!

Piece of cake anyone...!
