A few questions ...

Hi everyone

My DD is now 9 months (although born 2 weeks early), and although she enjoys some finger foods, she is still not good with lumpy food from the spoon eg baby pasta. She gags and is sick. I wondered at what age other peoples' babies could cope with more lumpy or mashed food? And did you keep trying it every day even if they couldn't eat it very well - or leave it a week or so and try again? It is very disheartening when they sick up your lovely home-cooked food and then you have to wash everything and re-feed

Also, what are your babies favourite receipes? My DD only seems to like my lamb casserole (and even that depends on her mood!) and Ready Brek + banana - but she loves commercial baby food?!

And one last question for those of you with bigger babies - how many teaspoons does your DC eat at each mealtime? My daughter used to have a good appetite but now only eats 10-15 teaspoons, which doesn't seem like a lot to me?!

Thanks

I'm in know way qualified to answer you but will give you my personal experience!

Starting from the bottom, if you put how much you think your DD eats in a freezer bag and hold it up to her tummy you will see its probably more than you think!

At 9 months both my boys had whatever we were having in fact DS2 started on family meals(i always cook from fresh, and use kallo low salt stock cubes when i need stock)

Until the age of 1 babies get all they need from their milk (i know this of BF not sure if its the same for formula)

Do you feed her or let her feed herself, i know thats sounds crazy/messy but it may help with the gagging, i did BLW and never mashed anything for DS2, it made such a difference, will get a link in a sec!

Keep trying foods not the next day but within a couple of weeks

Is she sick every time she has solids or does she just spit a bit out every now and again, if she is really sick every time i would ignore everything i have said and see your GP, if she is just spitting it out then unless she is seriously underweight i wouldn't refeed her, she will then be hungry at snack/next meal time and maybe eat better

Hope this is of some help, someone will be along soon who actually knows what they are talking about!

Thanks for your reply - great idea with the freezer bag! I know she gets most of what she needs from her milk but I think they need iron from food at this age, aswell as in general protein, carbs + fat. I do let her try to feed herself sometimes, eg today for tea she had omlette and diced tomatoes + cucumber ... but I'm not sure she really ate very much. But I think I will try finger foods for tea more often because like you say it will probably help with the lumps in the food I feed her. Does it take a while for them to start feeding themselves decent amounts of food? She also holds the spoon sometimes when I feed her and gets a few mouthfuls in (if she's lucky!) - and has finger foods eg rice cakes with breakfast and lunch aswell.

She's only sick when she gags on lumps in the food I feed her. The problem is when she is sick if she doesn't eat again she wakes in the night for a milk feed.

I think my main concern is that she will turn into a fussy eater ... but maybe she is eating more than I think.

dss always used to gag and vomit at the same age as your dd. I fed them puree for long time along with some finger foods. dd now 8 months is ok with lumpy food but i am still feeding her pureed food at one meal time to make her easy to eat.
Her favourite meal is chicken with corgettes and potato. pureed though.
In my experience some babied take longer and some are much quicker so try not to rush.
