How do I soft boil an egg? I need consensus!

I need to know how to cook a soft boiled egg, suitable for soldier dipping. I need a nice firmish white and a drippy yolk.

I need a different method for 1) fridge eggs and 2 room temp eggs.

I can actually cook, but for some reason a consistent method for a perfectly cooked egg has so far eluded me!

Thanks!

Delia's 2 methods are fab and foolproof

winnybella - don't put them on a full rolling boil, you want it just bubbling. rolling boil bashes the eggs around and means they're more likely to crack.

Oh, and make sure all the eggs you're cooking are roughly the same size (am obsessive about this and will line them up to make sure.

Aaah, thanks, Jareth, will try tomorrow morning.
Am obsessive about my eggs, too.

DD and I had dippy eggs for lunch today. She loves them so much, when she's finished she starts on the shell. I wasn't concentrating today and heard her crunching.

I keep mine ( size - large ) in the fridge as they would get smashed elsewhere ( very clumsy ). I pierce them with an egg piercer, stick them in a very very small pan and pour boiling water over them. Timer on for 5 mins. Meanwhile make the soldiers. When timer goes off, take them out, carry them to table, behead and eat. Always a firm white and a dippy yolk.

I think I'll try the eggs in boiling water method. My Mum would be like this

taffeta, arf at your DD eating the shell, i'm sure there's plenty of goodness in them

Put the bread in the toaster, place the eggs (fridge temp) into boiling water. When the toast pops up, your eggs are ready. Oddly it works every time regardless of the bread or toaster or 'browness' of the toast
