When did you switch from whole milk to semi-skimmed?

I have a feeling that with DD I switched from formula straight to semi-skimmed cows milk after someone told me it was okay (gave DS whole milk for ages) - now have DD2 and have switched her to whole milk since she turned 1 but I was wondering when I can change to semi-skimmed, it would just be easier to only buy one type.

As I said, I'm fairly sure that DD1 had SS and she is very fit and well.

The minute dd turned two. So much easier to only have to buy one lot of milk.

we also still have full fat and don't have ss in the house

littledawley · 29/03/2010 19:24

Rockbird, is that the official guidance? Two?
I don't want us all on whole milk as I'm not keen on the taste and I do try to keep an eye on my fat intake (not the DC, just me).

put dd on it at 2 as per guidelines. Just one lot of milk to buy why don't you "have it in the house" OTTMummA might it mutate and grow tentacles or something ?

Rockbird · 29/03/2010 19:30

Yes, official guidelines at the moment. If DD was a really bad eater then I might have kept her on full but she's fine for nutrients

JaynieB · 29/03/2010 19:32

We switched when DD about 2.5, mostly to help me break my full fat addiction though! I love full fat milk but my waist does not

OTTMummA · 29/03/2010 19:34

lol, no, sorry DH won't have it, he was raised in a full fat, lard, dripping household dispite being slim and fit he doesn't like 'low fat nonsense' and im just used to the taste now so we just don't get it.
we don't have a lot of it on a daily basis, and i use powdered milk for tea/coffee etc.

Jaquelinehyde · 29/03/2010 19:38

I still give my 3 full fat and they are 4, 4, and 2.

DP and I both have semi skimmed, it works fine. Could see it being a pain with just one dc though.

MinnieMalone · 29/03/2010 19:42

When DS was about 3 yrs old. He was eating other full fat dairy (yoghurt, cheese), so thought it would Ok to switch and stop the 'two tyes of milk' faff.

DS is now 5 and we have a 1 yr old, too, so are back to buying full fat again. DS has decide he doesn't like 'blue milk' and will only drink semi-skimmed.

WoTmania · 29/03/2010 19:50

Another full fat for all household here - except DH has cows and we all DS1& 2, and I have goats. DD has mainly human apart from on cereal)

meltedmarsbars · 29/03/2010 23:23

Full fat here too - can't be doing with this nonsense peddled by the govt that reducing fat in milk from 4% to 2% is going to miraculously save the nation from lardy arses!

Bin the chips and donuts instead!

NoahAndTheWhale · 29/03/2010 23:59

We just have full fat milk as well.

littledawley · 30/03/2010 07:42

Think I'm going to switch all of the children to whole milk - thanks everyone.

Bodenbabe · 30/03/2010 07:47

Is it official advice though? I think official line is that from two they CAN go on to SS, not that they SHOULD. Between 2 and 5 they are supposed to gradually move from a high fat diet to a low fat one - but yo don't gradually go from full fat to SS, you just do it! So I'm not sure what you are supposed to do. I've been trying to get an answer on this for years and have never managed. I'm not too bothered with DS now and he has just switched to SS at 2.5 yo but I still want to know out of interest!

littledawley · 30/03/2010 09:04

I agree Bodenbabe - as I mentioned, my DD has only ever has semi-skimmed and she is really healthy. As far as I know the only difference is the amount of fat. My children drink loads of milk so I'm guessing that she has more than a child on whole milk that doesn't drink very much IYSWIM.

When he was two. DP and I have skimmed though so we still have two types of milk in the house! DS is a good eater and has a lot of cheese and yoghurt so didn't think he needed the extra fat in his milk. Plus, I kept nicking it to make hot chocolate with...

Eglu · 30/03/2010 09:21

The guidelines I have read in the past say they can go on to SS from two, and should definitely get at 5.

humptyismarriedtoanumpty · 30/03/2010 09:23

littledawley
My dd (5) and ds (4) both still on full fat milk but me and dh drink skimmed.
Can't really see what the problem is, unless they are getting too big, I'll probably keep them the way they are.
We get our milk from the milk man so it's easier for shopping - 4 pints blue and 2 pints red, 3 times a week!
Milkman is excellent idea cos you never run out for more than 1 day!! And no early morning dash to shop to buy more for cereal

MrsJohnDeere · 30/03/2010 09:42

We haven't. My 3.11 and 2.1 yo have full fat. Ds1 is so skinny that he needs all the fat he can get, and ds2 drinks so little of it that I can't see how it matters.

I buy skimmed milk for dh and myself, and they sometimes drink that if we've run out of full fat.
